Okay... I do know that you are not supposed to have two Syrians housed together. But JUST an idea... what if I were to get a very LARGE storage bin and put two of everything in it and keep both mother and daughter in it. Or should I not even bother trying?

I personally wouldn't bother, but before you give up all hope,Im sure your local pet shop would have some amswers.

Do not bother trying. It doesn't matter if syrians are family, they will still fight to the death.

acscurr, I would not trust anything the pet store says. If anything, they will agree with what you say, to make a sale.

taylorjade, you can do that, if you want 2 dead hamsters. No matter what the size of the cage is, 2 syrian's will fight. It is a trait that they carry. The Syrian breed is a solitary breed.

If you are not set on getting syrian hamsters, you can try getting 2 dwarf hamsters, and keeping them in a large storage bin. They like having company, and they would absolutely love all of that space.

okay thanks.

I bought a hamster for my daughter a few weeks ago. There aren't too many hamster rescues out there so I got her at a pet store (not petco or petsmart yuck) which I hate but oh well. I wanted a dwarf so I could have two together but nobody had any. So I got a Syrian and she wound up being pregnant. *huff* I will find homes for the babies and my 5-yr-old niece wants the mommy and I might just keep looking elseware for a couple dwarfs.

I didn't figure two would get along, even with a big space, and even if they were mother daughter, but I'd just thought I'd ask.

Your syrians can get along for a good amount of time. However, the problem that still stands, is that anything can cause a fight, and you will be sleeping when a fight breaks out. So, you will wake up to a dead hamster, or a injured hamster.

Regardless, keeping syrians together is not the right thing to do.

Syrians are solitary, terrirorail creatures- even if they don't fight, living together is stressful to them and will shorten their lives. By all means, do not keep them together. If you had any idea how many people I've heard whining about finding one hamster with no head when they got up int he morning, you wouldn't even consider it.

And 2-female-syrians-- you are about the most irresponsible, and arrogant pet owner that I have encountered in a long time. Please, no one listen to anything she says.

Look, i'm going to tell you what happen to me, and why its dangerous to be inexperience and foolish.

My girlfriend at the time got me a hamster for my birthday, it was a boy, a syrian hamster and i said well why don't we get a girl for him. Well got the girl brought her home to the male, let them sniff eachother out get to know eachother, broke up the little tiffs that they had at first time meeting and they seem fine afterwards. Well the female ended up having a couple litters gone wrong, probably because of the male being in the cage or just something i did, was way to inexperience didn't realize the amount of responsiblity involved. And for 2 years this syrians lived in the same cage got along and i moved to arizona and my brothers took care of them. Let's just say they woke up one morning with the male's body half eaten, THe point of this story is...

It doesn't matter, it could take 2 days, 2 weeks or even two years but syrians will attack the other if living in the same cage.
