Rotties are wonderful family dogs as long as they are raised right, and come from a well bred line. Rotties need an experienced hand. If your friend is a first time dog owner, I would suggest finding another breed until you can do enough research about them. Be sure your friend gets lots of books to read about them. If rotties are not socialized and brought up correctly, they can have behavior issues, such as aggression.
Their great dogs, just be sure to do extensive research on them before getting one ;)

That isn't entirely true IceyBlueSibes, rottweilers make wonderful first dogs but like you said they have to be raised and bred right. My first dog was a rottweiler, she had a bad past but with patience even a bad dog can be a good dog.

Rotts are great dogs. Sometimes you luck and get laid back one other times they keep you busy.
With Rotts you have to train train train. It is highly suggested that you train for at least 3 yrs proffessionally and keep working on them daily.
sarge my rott who is almost five months loves my kids to death. His lil butt goes back and forth so fast when they come home from school.
If your friend has a lot of patients and can train well then yeah go for it. If not then I would also suggest a diff breed. Dont let them be untrained or they can get very aggressive. Also Rotts need more high quality food becuz of health reasons. Hips and other things like that. Tell him to research rotts a lot before deciding. And make sure he gets one from a great breeder not a back yard breeder.

Have your friend check out Rottweiler.net The people
there have more experience and will be able to answer
all his questions. Rotties are a great breed I might add, but as the others have said they do have a strong will and they can be a great family pet. My girl will be 8 next month and she's great with kids BUT I
would never leave her or any dog alone with kids, you never know what can happen, even in play they
can hurt you due to there massive size. ;)

Was never implying that... but you may take it as you want.
I just said, if they aren't experienced enough with dogs and haven't done much research on the rotties, he should do RESEARCH first. I never said ANYTHING about rotties being a bad first dog... you read way to into it.
It's just better to read up and become knowledged about the breed before acquiring one that requires a lot of time, patience, and persistent training.

hope this answers part of your question about whether rotties over the age of 1 yr are good wih kids. Taz is 9 yrs old and loves my kids all under 10 yrs old.
He's pictured here with my 4 yr old son

not many dogs would let you hug them whilst chewing their favourite treat. i'll try and find a pic out of him with my 7 month old son i know i have some some where.

You've been given some really good advice and I hope your friend is serious about picking the right breed for your family.
I happen to adore rotties but they do need training, and socialization.

The dogs are great but you have to watch what breeder they come from. Personally I would go to a rescue and adopt one that has lived with kids. But if a breeder is a must please show your firend this information.
