Do NOT give it any more of that stuff- it will make him worse. If he has wettail, you need to get him to the vet NOW!!! He will need to have antibiotics, rehydration and serious attention and nursing in order to pull through. You need to get it to drink as much as possible if you can't get it to the vet until morning. Use an eye dropper- whatever you have- and force it to drink if you have to. I don't want to scare you, but I want you to know how serious this is and how much you need to get it to the vet. Your hamster is lucky to be alive now- as wettail can kill them in a day or two if not treated by a vet.

Just a note for anyone reading reguarding Dri-tail medication-

NEVER USE DRI-TAIL!!!!!!!!!!

Dri-tail will make your hamster sick when it is well- it will make it worse when it is sick. Petco has finally been convinced to stop carrying the product- and it was never intended to be given every day- it is not a vitamin supplement. Let me tell you what Dri-tail is...

Dri-Tail- or 'wettail drops' contains a very weak over-the-counter antibiotic. This antibiotic is only stong enough to kill the 'helpful' bacteria in the digestive tract. This 'helpful' bacteria is what a hamster relies on to digest his food.

Wettail occurs when the 'harmful' bacteria takes over. It is caused from stress- usually in young hamsters- always in syrians, and the stress may be anything that makes the hamster afraid or uncomfortable. Wettail HAS to be treated by a stronger, vet-prescribed antibiotic. Your hamster needs to go to the vet at the first signs of wettail- as it can kill in 24-48 hours if not trated right away.

Some people give their hamster dri-tail every day thinking it will prevent wettail! This is the WORST thing you could do! The nature of antibiotics is to encourage the body to fight against the infection. In doing do, the body becomes stronger, or immune to, the antibiotic. The antibiotic in Dri-tail decreases the effectiveness of a vet-prescribed antibiotic by half. And there are only three known antibiotics safe for hamsters. You won't have a lot of options in helping your hamster get well- no matter WHAT is wrong with them, if you are forcing Dri-tial on them every day.

like jennawing said...

dri-tail and any other store bought wet tail treatment kills the good bacteria and sometimes just covers up the wet tail appearance.

so outside she may look fine but inside she is still very very sick.

the stores (if any still sell it) only sell it to make an extra $5.00, it really doesn't help at all.

please take her to the vet asap.

Hmm....I don't mean to be burst your bubble, but she *may* not be better. Like said, Dri-tail only hides the symptoms :(

A hamster can have diarhea that is NOT wettail. You need to read this page on wettail, and if she has had any more of these symptoms, you need to try to borrow some money or beg off the vet or something.
