I took it back immediately! i had my qualms and all my fears were realized. first he tried to step off the first level onto the wheel because it is directly above it. he promptly fell across it. then he started climbing the bars where when he got to the top he nearly fell again. this is about 2 ft tall, which is too high to fall over & over again from. it's a dangerous cage which could easily be remedied by making the platforms all the way across(same size as the floor) with a couple access holes with tubes. that way the hamster would only fall a few inches at worst. i emailed the company and got no response. i would say not to buy CT 2 either as they are about 18 in high. stick with one level and just buy a 2nd 1 level cage and connect the 2 with tubes.

I'm not too sure about it being good for hamsters but with mice i think it is wonderful. A while ago my single male mouse Benny had it as a cage, and did perfecting fine in it. :)

Hamsters are more "clumsey" and also like to drop down after climbing to the top (no matter how tall the cage is).

I have a smallish Syrian, and she seems to get around well in a CT2, and never falls. I assisted her by putting one of those ceramic PETCO log cabin houses up against the front bars in the middle. She just steps up on it and walks to the levels. She easily cross between the two on the top of the wheel.

u right about hamsters dropping down instead of climbing back down. exactly what he wanted to do. i think smaller pets might work, but for larger hamsters like mine, much too dangerous.

There is new evidence that the design of hte crittertrails- with the petting zone and the tube htat runs up- has been the cause of many hamster deaths. My first hamster did this often with hers and it's a wonder she made it as long as she did!

The hamster will pack the petting zone super full of bedding, which restricts his air to start with. THEN some of the bedding will fall back downhte tube, and the hamster packs it tight in a panic to get back out- and they end up suffocating in the tube. Crittertrail is supposed to be redesigning that tube so it is not bent at the bottom and won't catch the bedding. They have also redesigned the top petting zone latch, making it part metal so they won't break so easily.

Crittertrails are not good for syrians, anyway. Some syrians will not outgrow the tubes, but not many. But mainly, when they get old, and can no longer climb, their only option is that very tiny bottom floor. I gave up spending loads of money on broght pretty cages and keep my critters in bins now.

I have no problems with my dwarfs in CT3s. I drilled tons of holes in the petting zone to allow for more air flow, I also drilled holes along the tube to allow for more air there. My hamsters that are in CT3s right now dont' fall, they actually climb back down. It's really cute watching them. But I also have extra platforms and tubes so in one of them there is 3 platforms accross with two tubes to access that area so they can't climb as high.

My golden, who the cage was originally purchased for couldn't fit in the tubes, my syrian dwarfs who had it 2nd were fine in it, and my two gerbils who live in it now love it, but definitely not made for big hampsters.

would be nice if the company advised on the box that this is best for smaller hamsters & that u must decide on an individual basis if the cage works for u.

My rescue syrian Natchka's old family had her in a crittertrail xtreme and she couldn't manuver through the tubes she was so big without bending her hammy spine in half:( I think they should rethink the drastic curves on that model if they want to keep marketing it for "all hamster breeds". :hamster3: :hamster3:

I feel you pain. I am 5'11 myself and as a chick occasionally am expected to wear heels or other forms of torture. I knocked myself out when I forgot to duck in the laundryroom of my old house. Ooof! Not one of my brighter moments. I wish I had people critter proofing my life so I don't hurt myself!
