Don't think of it as a "purr," like the sound cats make when they are content. This sound means that the animal feels threatened, and wants to be left alone. Pet headgehogs usually do this when they are new, and not used to the attention. After it learns that your aren't going to hurt it, it will seem braver all the time, and you'll think that he forgot how to make this noise.
