Hey guys,
I'm new hear! anyways, i belong to a site called hamsterific, and i just thought i would join another one to broaden my horizons:) okay, so here it goes: I think my female syrian has anal prolapse. But here's the deal, i live in a small town. by that i mean small. The nearest city is three hours away, so i cant get her to a vet anytime soon. so please dont tell me how serious it is and that i need to see a vet, cuz i know that. i'm pretty scared because i heard it's fatal and what not. She's still running in her wheel evey night and eating and drinking. But her anus is bulging out. is there anything i can do for her now at home, or is it completely hopeless?

I'd really like to hear what you have to say, so thanks!

Oh God. Isn't there any hamster expert, breeder, or someone you can network to who might be able to help? Can't you CALL a good hamster vet and ask what to do? Every respectable hamster vet I know would always call you back with advice in that case.

There is no traveling vet who could take a look? I have heard that in some rural areas vets who do not live in the area pass through handling cases on a rotating basis.

I have no idea myself what to do in that case other than seek advice, or research it on the Web. Found this. I suppose as a LAST measure, after trying every other option, you could careful try to do that yourself with a sterile Q-Tip, but only as a very last measure. I would not want to try it.

Hope you get good advice from a vet.

>> A hamster may suffer from a rectal prolapse where the intestine is pushed through the anus to the outside of the body. If the intestine is not damaged a vet may be able to manipulate the intestine back inside the body. However, if the intestine is damaged this may not be possible.

Often it is diarrohea or constipation that is the cause of the excessive straining that has caused the rectal prolapse and if this continues the rectal prolapse may recur. <<
