Hello! I don't have a pig, but am curious... can they be litter trained? or do they let you know when they need to go outside to go to the bathroom? do they live inside like a dog? can you train them the same way you train a dog? thanks!

only had one a day :D and thats still at a friends farm till I can sort things out but from what i've researched you train umm just like you do a cat!! use a litter tray type thing and move muck into it and it'll start using the same place eventually.

also they tend to choose to do it outside, soon as their tail stops waggling and goes up (something like that I read) means they wanna go. I assume they'll go towards the door?

They are very smart! You litter train them in a big shallow litter pan/tray. I just use newspaper (less mess than litter). I put it at the back door and will be training her to go outside as soon as the snow is gone. She was much easier to train any dog I've ever had. They are alot like having a dog in the house...but they can't jump up on furniture and things. She is extremely social and loves any and all attention! She gets along well with all my other pets...dogs, cats, birds. And what a personality!!! Lea

Yep . my pig is 2 years old now, and I had him since he was a baby, the first day home I placed him in one of those long plastic sweater boxs. He pottied, and always pottied there untill he got to big at almost a year old. We then introduced him outside and now he doesn't use a litter box only wants to go outside. He walks to the back door and pushes it with his nose and the door makes a squeak sound. I let him out and when he is ready to come inside, he rubs his snout on the wall beside the door and it sounds like a chair is being moved around, but it is my piggy. They are soo smart.
And they do their business and come right back too, they are not potty shy like some doggies that make you wait forever. lol

My first pig was and indoor/outdoor pig, just like my dogs. Except , I had to house train my dogs. I never had to potty train my pig. He always came to me and snorted to get my attention, or wake me up if it was in the morning. Then he would go to the back door so I could let him out. He was a good pig, I miss him. My current pig doesn't like to come in as much, but when she is inside, she asks to go out when she is ready. She has never had an accident in the house.
I have an unrelated question. Does spaying females mellow them out any?

I read that it will mellow them out. Mine is not spayed but I was reading about it. It is suppose to stop the "piggie PMS" that they get. Although, mine doesn't really have any "symtoms"...yet anyway. She is about 7 months old so I would of thought she would have them by now. How does your piggie act?

My pig is 3 years old. I think about a year old or a little after, she started showing obvious signs of being in heat. Actually, that is the time that she will let us handle her the most. But if you turn your back, she is right on top of you. It is pretty funny. We have pictures of her trying to mount my German Shepherd. The thing with her is, the rest of the time, she is kind of bitchy. She will be nice to you only if you have food. When I don't have food for her she will let me pet her for about 5 seconds and then make a growling sound and back up. I had a neutered male before her and he was friendly and mellow always. So, I thought maybe it was the hormones that were making her irritable. She really is the prettiest pig and of course very smart. I just wish she enjoyed being pet a little more. Is your pig affectionate?

Oh my....LOL...

Yes, my pig is extremely affectionate. She is a house piggie and wherever I am..she has to be. If I am sitting on the couch she has to be on my lap (not sure how much longer that will be possible..lol) She comes in our room at about 4:00 a.m. and wants in bed with us...and of course, she gets her way. If my one dog comes near me she will try to chase her away from me....she is a very jealous spoiled pig! She does go into these spells where she will try to jump on us and pushes us with her nose...we thought she was just trying to play but maybe that is when she is in heat??? It is pretty funny when she tries to jump on us...well, usually me. I'm not sure what you mean by "growls and backs up"...but that would kinda scare me...
Sorry, I don't know if getting her spayed will mellow her out or not...maybe someone else on here with more experience with piggie's would know.
Good luck...Lea

Yes, she will mellow out a whole lot if spayed. She should be spayed , this will prevent her from getting tumors in her uterus which cause cancer.

Well, I will get her spayed very soon then. That is so cool that your pig is so loving. She sounds like a cat. I bet that when she jumps on you, that is when she's in heat. That's exactly what my pig does.

My pig is becoming a nightmare. Don't know if it was the recent move, but even when we first brought her home she went into her box, now she seams to be going wherever she wants to. How can I get her back on track to use her box??? This is becoming very frustrating. Now she is even peeing while eating and drinking. I have been going through rolls and rolls of paper towels. PLEASE HELP.

Update!!! My little piggie is doing great. She will not go #2 inside the house what so ever. She will hold it til we get home then she screams MA MA and we know shes got to go outside. She will also when out in the living room go to the door if shes got to go which is great. At night she goes in her box, but for the life of me she will only go on one side of the box. If I turn the box around she will turn around and still use the same side as before meaning that side is a mess when it comes to changing the litter.
