Hey everyone!
thanks for all those responses to my last thread, you have all been so helpful!
Well, I was going to buy a pet store but now it looks like I am starting my own, all by myself.
What products do you reccommend I carry?
I will have a gourmet pet bakery, and already have a supplier. And we will also be carrying puppies and kittens, but only a few at a time. I wanted to do adoptions, but the MSPCA does not want to give me puppies, only full grown dogs, and I cant do that. Plus residents I have talked to said they would want to be able to buy a puppy, as we dont have any place close by...
So my question to you is, what brands of food do I carry? Iams? Eukanuba? Purina? All of them?
Are there any healthy, special brands I should know about?
I will be going to other nearby streos to see waht they have, but many of these palces dont carry hardly enought. I want to know what people really want!
I will need help in types of food and such to carry for a dog, cat, small animals (hamsters, gerbils, mice, etc)., birds, and fish.
Also if anyone knows of a great wholesaleer or supplier of anything unique please post!!!
thanks!
James

This is what you will be supporting by selling puppies and kittens. www.nopuppymills.com and you will totaly counter everything about the rescues and shelter people are trying to do. No ands, if's or butt... this is FACT.
Remeber many many people are boycotting petstores selling puppies and kittens. They are litterly HATED in the dog world by responsible people.
Just be ready for that.

Sorry can't help you with much else, I find it too sad to even continue.

I agree it's a fact. Pets Mart & Petco have rescues all of the time & don't sell puppies. Everyday more & more people are getting educated! Heck the news media is even catching on showing the repulsive abuse that goes on in the all mighty "pad the wallet" pet trade.

it's quite different in the uk, I have worked in a couple of pet stores with pups, and they come from people who have too many and have donated some to the store. It sounds quite bad in the US.

I live in the US and I dont know what its like in the UK but I avoid going into pets shops that sell puppies and kittens the animals there are NOT treated right and most of them end up in shelters because they are so unsocialized that their owners who bought them cant handle them anymore :( I went into a pet shop that sold dogs once the prices were soo high that they barely had a chance of being bought and almost all of them were out of water(they were being given water through a rodent water bottle!) and all of their food had fallen through the cage floor so that they couldnt reach it! In the USA the is a very sad yet common problem :(

Hi,
I would definitely carry Nutro and possible Inova both are extremely good dog foods.

ANother idea is to find local artists that give a protion of their sales to the shelters and display their work.

Podunk, Why are you brining up an old thread that the last comment was way back in March? I agree with Barndi 100% by the way. I know you are new but you will realize real quick millers are not liked too much on this site. Mind your own business now please! :crowded:

Hey guyc-FYI-I work in a pet store and we just began carrying puppies.
none of them are from puppy mills, but from breeders that have webcams that show the puppies so that we can see them, their parents, and their environment
When they first arrive they stay @ my boss' house for about two weeks during that time they are examined by vets in order to be sure they are in good health
When the puppies are at the store and have excellent care all day everyday.
we do have high prices, but we have never had a puppy there for more then a month and we always get good feedback and pics from their owners
im not speaking for all pet stores, but just the ones that DO know what they are doing

Fergie Tony, I am sorry but no responsible breeder sells to a pet store. A responsible breeder wants to screen the new potential owner via, references, contacting the vet, your home etc. They want to make sure the puppy is going to a good home & that the breed is a good fit for the family. They do NOT sell an entire litter either. They also do not breed genetically inferior puppies. The parents are tested against any & all genetic problems. If the parent has a genetic problem, they are not used for breeding. A Back Yard Breeder or Puppy Miller breeds for money period! They do not care if they are breeding genetically defective dogs every single time they go into heat. They don't care who the puppy goes to either. It is pure & simple all about the money. Too many people are being educated now & won't purchase anything from pet shops that sell puppies. I know I don't nor do my freinds or family. Please don't be fooled by what your boss wants you to believe!

i would really like to make something clear. we never have anymore than 11 puppies at the store at a time. this way we can give them all of their medical and attention needs. the most that we get from the breeder is MAYBE two puppies at a time. i realize that most pet stores do get their puppies from puppy mills which i think is terrible and disgusting and should be stopped right away, but the small family owned pet store that i work at is one of the small handfull of stores that actually care about the puppies and not just the profit.
i dont mean to sound mean, but i just wanted to get my point across-however i do agree with everything that is said on this topic that puppy mills are disgusting-all you have to do is watch wild rescues on animals planet...

You just do not get it. NO RESPONSILBE breeder would allow their puppies to be sold in a pet store.
A responsible breeder is 100% responsible for the life they bring into this world.
No responsible breeder would even mate the dogs without a waiting list already done and homes lined up for for the puppies.
No responsible breeder would allow a puppy to be sold sigh unseen without a proper interview, referance check and home check done.
A responsible breeder has a contract stating their puppy is guarrentied for a minumim of 2 years however most ore now for the life of that pet.
A contract stating that this is pet quality and will be altered by 6 months old or is already altered at the time of going to a new home.
Is on a co ownership contract if it was sold as show/breeding quality.
What I am trying to get across is that any puppy in a pet shop is there purely for profit. It was bred with the intenttion of being merchandiese in a window. It was not bred with the best intentions of the breed. If the store doens't care about profit then they would have the shelters in there instead of the ill bred puppies.

Please don't carry harmful products. What I mean is, try not to carry product like cedar and hedgehog food. They are not good. Cedar is self explanitory, as for hedgehog food, don't get me started...you could do a net search to learn about the horror for yourself. I think that the only way for people to not buy a harmful pet product is if the store just doesn't carry said product to begin with. There are some better alternatives, like carefresh pet bedding, or a high quality cat food like chiken soup lite or royal canin cat slim. I just don't like to go to a pet store knowing some unknowing person bought or is going to buy whatever the harmful product may be. As for dogs, petstores + dogs = unhappy, unhealthy, bad quality pet. Just my thoughts (even if they are somewhat long).

VERY well said Brandi!!!! They should be allowing shelter groups & rescue groups to come in to place dogs up for adoption. I doubt seriously that she watched the video either. What concerns me is I have seen her other posts & Fergie seems to be an intelligent person. Gives great answers on other topics. However she's obviously been brainwashed by her boss & the back yard breeder they are getting their profit puppies from. :hypnotize :smash:

However there are some shops that do carry puppies and kitties for sale and I visit them a lot. They take in pets from shelters and help with space and stuff like that.
So instead of slamming a person how about saying "It would be great if you could start a pet store and help the shelters out by placing some of those dogs or cats that are stuck in a shelter." Do not buy them from a breeder or even out of the paper. Help a shelter or a rescue out and then you would have a wonderful pet store which I would be happy to visit and shop.

We have always stated that giving that space to the shelter animals is a great idea.
However buying shelter animals for resell is against shelter policies and contracts. (at least around here and the repituble shelters)

The store I am referring too takes in pets but the adoption and fees have to be taken care of at the shelter. The shelter has all rights to the pets.
