Hi I have a new hamster. I read that they are suppose to pee in one corner and one corner alone. But this one pees everywhere. i have an external wheel and the hamster pees in it. in addition the hamster stores food in it which is highly annoying. i think he is only 6weeks old. a girl on my campus was gicing them away. can anyone give me a recomendation to help with the storing food problem because always though that animals were not suppose to go to the bathroom where they eat

thanks
luna

First of all, external wheels are always going to be a pain. A lot of hamsters pee in their wheel as they run even if they are potty trained. What type of cage does your hamster have? Maybe a new cage with a new wheel that has a solid floor yet is easier to clean, and take the bedding out of would be good.

As for potty training. . .some hamsters will refuse to ever go in one. Some will also favore a corner once they become a little older. Plus some hamsters catch onto the "potty" idea sooner then others. So just wait a little longer and see if she figures it out. :)

That's another reason to discourage breeding, and why many dormitories do not allow pets.

Syrian hamsters pee in one corner. I have 11 here and have had many others and they all always peed in a corner. Dwarf hamsters do not do that but pee in tubes to mark their territory; it makes them feel more secure.

If you have a Syrian who does not pee in one corner he/she may be scared, nervous, or not given enough peace and quiet, or a safe place to hide when asleep.

Of all the hamsters I have one pees on her stash. Another also did, but she passed away. It is not something they all do. Give less food each time, with more feedings, and remove soiled food once a day. That way they will have less time to horde it and pee on it. I suppose some of them do that to mark it as their food. I donot know if it effects them if they eat it, but I doubt if it is a good thing.

oh as for revenge's comment..its a typo hun if you look at where the v and c are oriented on a standard keyboard you will see that it is easy to miss the v and hit a c :)

Before I knew better I was sold wooden gerbil houses for Syrians. The hams never used them, so I gave them to the gerbils and got the bigger wooden hamster house, the kind an adult ham can EASILY fit inside with plenty of room.

In the recent Summer warmer weather none of my crew was too fond of sleeping inside things; they may in cooler weather. One thing is certain, and I was not initially sure of this - both hams and gerbs all have different personalities and likes and dislikes. Even two brothers were very different.

Hams have a dislike of sleeping with nothing above them. Not safe.

I think there is a thread on this site about that Crittertail cage. I know I saw one about a CT3, and it was not a good recommendation. You may wish to Search for it, but I seem to recall people were not too high on your type of cage. I have a CT2 for one smaller ham (which was given to me) and, although a little small, it is OK. Most of mine are in big think Sterilite thirty gallon bins with plenty of toys and a Comfort Wheel inside.
