you should visit your local humane society. there are probably oodles of rodents that need a home. you don't need to breed any. about half of animals turned into shelters have to be put to sleep because of no available home. take some of them but don't breed any more - there are too many homeless pets already!

I'm a gerbil breeder not a person looking to make a bunch of gerbil pets. I try to breed the "ideal" gerbils maintaining quality, personality, and beauty. I give them to good homes with a small adoption fee to ward off reptile owners who want them as feeders. My boyfriend happens to be a volunteer at a local shelter as well. It's not like we're irrisponsible breeders.
It's really a shame how many pets are put into shelters. My bf volunteers in a nokill nonprofit shelter...we just wouldn't be able to bear with a killshelter. It's amazing how people dont make the effort to educate themselves about their pets and dump them in the streets and such... some people though just dont have the choice. I guess for all those homeless pets, the minority of the people that are aware of it need to make the majority of the people realize it...
Speaking of which, i read an interesting article yesterday about euthanized animals being used as meat by products for dog and cat food. Disgusting...

I don't know statistics on gerbils but I do think the smaller the pet the safer they are against being PTS. I know, however, that here in Minnesota there are numerous bunnies & guineas PTS at shelters. I believe in euthanasia in cases of severe illness or behavior problem (buns & pigs wouldn't ever have such a severe behav prob, I wouldn't think! Over the years we have had well over a dozen pigs (5 now; all males neutered) & 6 buns (one died of snuffles; we have 5 now, all spayed & neutered), some maynot be as sweet as others, but certainly never worthy of PTS for an imperfect personality!!) but anyhow, there are too manyof them. so - anyone thinking of breeding buns or pigs, please think again. some shelters take in preg buns & pigs & need people to foster them, so that's a good deed people could do for animals in their area - we do it here.

in reply to my last message, this is the article about euthanized animals being used as dog and cat food. The name of the article is Dog Eat Dog. At the end of the article you can read on to the next page which is actually the most important part of the article, it tells you how to recognize what may actually be in the food you feed your pets. Very interesting yet very disgusting.

I think I will go to a shelter to get some more animals. the only problem is I need a new cage. how much would a cage for a bird be? and for a guinea pig? and for a small rodent(gerbil)?
p.s: once at my humaine society (were I volunteer) someone left a bag at the front gate. they opened it and it was a boa. a really big boa:agree: :agree:

At the shelter where I volunteer, sometimes people donate their cages along with their pets & they sell them for cheap - or they have even given me one, which I would give you, if you were here. It's out on our back porch, here in snowy Minnesota. Cages can be kind of expensive, but petCo & PetSmart probably have good prices, or sometimes you can even find something at a second hand place. For very small pets you can use an aquarium with a crack in it that won't work any more for fish. Good luck with taking in pets, just make sure to get info about them & don't get in over your head. I've done that; we have a lot of pets which is fine except when a bunch get sick at once. Once I had two pets & a child on three different med schedules & I thought I would go crazy before the end of the prescriptions!

My Friend has three male gerbils and three female gerbils that she needs to find a home for. She is in Arizona, so I don't know if it would be possible to get them to you.
