help me stop my gerbil before.............

help me stop CHUBZYUBZY(MY GERBIL) from chewing his wheel and igloo. He has food water and plenty of wood but he chews his wheel and igloo.

Its a natural instinct for gerbils to chew on stuff. You can't really stop him in a non abusive way. They may or may not break out the habit but from personal experience, they don't usually break it. I just take the toys out at night. :angel5:

I really dont recommend this technique but you can put a dab of mild perfume on the item you dont want him to chew on and he should avoid it. I dont think it is healty but my friend does it and her gerbils seem to be fine. *Haley*

Eek the perfume would taste bad so it wouldnt definitly stop them. But it's their instinct they aren't doing anything wrong. It can't be good for them.

I have never had a problem with them chewing on anything actually I didnt care hehe. But my friend does and thats what she does. Oh well LOL *Haley*

I had the same problem with my rescue gerbils except they chewed their water bottle. I gave them a piece of wood like u did and they didn't think much of it either! I was going throgh 2-3 water bottles a week. I made a cage out of chicken wire to go round it, and this bottle has lasted 6 months, a record for my gerbils. So give it a go.................it does work!:daisy:

DO NOT put perfume or anything like it on items in your gerbil's cage. It could poison him/her. (In fact, it probably would).
Take the items out of the cage. Gerbils chew. It's just what they do! Put in wood toys and houses. This slows down the process. Otherwise, put in toilet paper or paper towel tubes. They love those. By all means, do not put perfume on their stuff. It will make them sick.
