I was just wondering if anyone knew of a method of getting your bird to fly. I have a very large room which is perfect for my tiel to fly around in. Yet, I can't get him to fly.

What I always see in movies is they kind of jolt the bird up when it's on their finger. I tried this, but my little Lucky just hangs on for dear life.

If anyone has any suggestion, I would appreciate it.

Thanks

Hehe yeah that whole try to throw them off your finger thing doesn't work very well, huh? I tried it with Zeek, but he would usually dig in with his claws and, if the tossing persisted, he would clamp on with his beak. Yowch.

He will, however, leap off of my finger and into his cage when he knows there is fresh, untouched food in his dishes. I've been moving my finger further and further away, and he'll jump and fly every time. This method works for me, but I don't particularly want him flying around everywhere. He's satisfied with a beeline to his cage, and I'm fine with that.

I suppose you could try holding him and tossing...without letting him grab on to your fingers or anything. Mind you, pretend to do it a couple of times so that by the third he'll be more ready to fly and not hurt himself. You can also start off low and toss him low so that if he isn't quick enough to get on his wings he won't hurt himself when he is falling

Throwing a bird into the air is a proven method to teach them to fly.

I've done it with my bird, very low to the ground, and even though he flies backwards, he's begun to use his wings a lot more.

Tweezles idea works as I did that too. Also set him on top of his cage with a food dish by you about three feet away. He will fly when he is ready.Probably just a little scared.Throwing him would make the process of flying not a pleasant one and I would think the trust and bond you had would go right out the window.

I have tried that luring method, and it hasn't worked. So I guess each method works on its own section of the bird population.

He would just stick his neck out as far as he could, or put his foot up in the air and tell me to 'step up'.
