A bit ago, one of my male bettas developed a slight bulge in his abdomen. I immediatly changed his water and put him in a fresh tank, praying it wasn't dropsy... The next day the bulge was bigger, but had shifted to only the right side. I figured there wasn't much I could do to help him, plus he didn't act sick (swimming/eating energetically) so I took no action. The next day, his bulge was HUGE and still in the same place (but he was still swimming around like nothing was wrong). The NEXT day, I noticed that the bulge had erupted from his skin between his scales and had a large, pea shaped/sized piece of skin protruding from him (right behind his right fin). However, he was STILL swimming around and eating and being as happy as ever.
At this point I feared the worst. I treated the water with an anti-bacterial in some wierd, vain attempt to deny the fact that my fish had.. basically an unknown growth the size of a pea erupting from his side.
The next day, the growth had fallen from his side but was hanging by ... some tissue. It fell off completly that day and I changed the water again (which smelled HORRIBLE) I didn't change the water sooner for fear of stressing him with the ... thing.. hanging off of him. I fished out the piece of tissue that had come out of his body and that single piece of tissue was so odiferous that I literally gagged and had to throw it our dumpster outside (it overpowered the lidded kitchen trash can)
To top the whole story; this all happened a few weeks ago and if you were to look at my fish (which is still alive) you would never guess that anything had ever been wrong with him.
So.... anyone have something like this happen to them? Any guesses as to what was wrong with my fish?
