I may be the only one that thinks this, but I have the opinion that these fish should not be sold to the beginning fishkeeper, nor should they be sold to people who have small tanks. In reality these fish should only be specially ordered for people who are serious about keeping them in proper conditions.
I too have made the mistake of having the id shark in a small tank when I didn't know any better, but now that I know better I try to help others with my knowledge. I'm by no means experienced in fact I'm pretty new to proper care of fish, but from my reading and learning on the net I believe I have learned a lot of valuable lessons.

To many times have I read or seen people keeping idsharks/bala sharks in 10-50 gallon tanks. This is not appropriate by any means! They need a large aquarium to live properly and they are schooling fish. I've seen both balas and id's bash themselves to death in small aquariums because they do not have the room to swim. My opinion is that they should not be kept in anything less then a 100 gallon tank. The reason for this is because they need a lot of swimming area, and they also grow quite big. I've seen I'd's that were huge.

Please if anyone is considering these fish, do some research and buy the proper size tanks for them. They will not live a long healthy life in an aquarium that is to small for them. Not only that they will become stunted.

Sorry if this was a long rant, and by no means was this bashing anyone. I just wanted to share my opinion on these two wonderful fish.

Though i don't really have any idea what Id sharks/bala sharks are, but i think what you mentioned is true. Big fishes aren't suitable to be kept in small tanks. They will grow and need space to swim and move around too.

It is good to have it up brought up. I think people will feel the same way as you too. :)

eh, not really. Your friend may have lucked out with his bala, that or because of the small conditions, the bala isn't as healthy and is not showing its true colors.

ID Sharks, I am assuming you mean Irredescent Sharks aren't for the beginner. Well, not for the beginner with a small tank :)
