ROFLMAO u dont. But here are some suggestions that might help. One do not use angel hair on your tree cat may eat it and choke on it. Two try and not decorate with shiny things on the bottom of the tree. Three always make sure you are supervising the tree and the cat. Cat can chew cords and zap.
Some cats no matter what you do will attack the tree others think it is nothing and do not pay attention to it. I have three cats and only one plays with the ornaments. So what I do is give it some old thread balls and have it play with those. New toys in her mind. Just give it some new toys and have it try that. Also have a spray bottle handy and if it tries climbing the tree then spray.
Dont dread it have some fun with this. You can always decorate a tree that is pet safety and then you can really enjoy it.
I know when I was a child I would buy my dog his favorite bones and throw them behind my presents so he would scratch his way to the bones and then I would get a peak at my presents LOL :p
Dont stress it isnt all that bad. Besides it is fun decorating a tree millions of times.

I have two cats (oh wait we now have 3) and they love the tree. One will hide under it and when the dog or other cat walks by she jumps on them. As for the decorations. Unbreakable ones work well. I have not had a glass ornament on my tree in 12 years. (same number of years as my oldest cat). They would be toast if I did. Our 3rd cat is 5 months old and this will be her first Christmas with us. It should be fun.

We did have the tree come crashing down one year but it was my brothers dog that did it not the cats. The mashpotato brain was trying to get behind it to find the cat and smash. The cat went flying one way the dog the other and the tree well it was coming down that day anyways it just got a head start.

hehe, try ferrets, they not only knock down the x-mas tree, they steal the ornaments lol!

my maine coon tends to "climb" the chrismas tree, to get to the realistic dove

Exactly what everyone said above... actually, sometimes nothing works on a certain cat. Melani only bothered the tree her first year here, but she soon got bored with it and has never touched it since.
Khaith, on the other hand o_o... well... he will not leave the christmas tree alone. The vet said to tie something noisey to the tree and see if that will scare him away from it. No luck. Anything we tried didn't work. He was determined to wreck the tree. But he loves to sleep in it ^_^.
lol, we just sorta have to deal with it, and not put any breakable or cherished ornaments on the tree.
((Its gonna be entertaining this year. Its Ethan's (our whippet mix) first Christmas, and he is a big time chewer! And if my plan goes right, we might even have a new kitten by then. (yup! ^_^ She's only 8 days old right now, but my best friend has her reserved for me. Its hard waiting about 5 or so more weeks!) Its going to be a hectic christmas!))
