Hello, I am a fairly novice cat owner so please bear withme, I have a couple of questions. I have recently acquired a new kitten. He is a stray that I found trapped on the side of the road. I released him and he followed me home. He is intolerably cute, so he had to stay. Being that he is probably around 6mo old (complete guess since he was small but also under-fed) and has lived outside his whole life, he relieves himself outdoors. We have a window that is always open so he has free run. This is wonderful, except that the poo is very stinky and wafts along the wind back toward the house. Is their a way i can eliminate this odor without having to pick up the fecal matter? My second question is about having him fixed. I have been told that i need to fix him, but was then warned that his personality would change. He doesn't spray or seem to have a wonderlust at this point. He is generally happy to go out to poo and then stay in and play or sleep all day. Can you tell me what to do please? thank you Oh by the way his name is Atticus and he is a little black kitty with a white patch.

Fixing should be done! A vet visit need to be done too for shots and a deworming. As for the smell, can you put some sand outside? They like to cover their poo. A litterbox indoors should be offered as well.

Yes, he has been dewormed and has recieved all vacinations, etc. The cat is an outdoor cat by nature. I don't want to encourage him pooing indoors, I want the smell to go away not come closer to my nose. When outside, he does cover his poo. I am not sure how familiar you are with Southern California, but it is hot and arid, and most of the earth is dry giving the same effect as sand. I don't need to cover the poo, just wondered if there is a way to remove the smell. Thank you anyway.

I've known male cats that have not changed personality-wise after being spayed, but usually males become less agressive and.or more calm..i wouldnt worry about that part.
