hi all just wanted to introduce the little boy that my husband and i adopted about a week and a half ago now, his name is Dexter and hes about 16-17 weeks old, domestic short hair...he likes to bounce off the walls and chase things that arent even there, but he loves playing with his fishing bobber on the fishing pole. He is quite the mama's boy, and doesnt like his dad too much...lol. he is skittish in some areas but good in others. and on this page you will also find a picture of our 3 fuzzballs, from left to right is Harley, I'lea and Ja'far.

also i have another question... today he started scratching his ears pretty badly, does this mean he may have ear mites? and if so, is there anything i can use for it until i can get to his vet appointment in december?

Aww!! All your pets are adorable, and its so great that you adopted Dexter instead of buying from a breeder or something.
Anyway, is there any reason you must wait until December? I mean, if it is ear mites, they can bother a cat quite badly (both of my cats have had eat mites at one point in their lives). Look in his ear. Is there any brown/black buildup in there? If so, then it probably is ear mites. Our vet gave us some medicine (I forget the name) and told us to clean it out, when you see the brown stuff, with a q-tip and alcohol. (put the alcohol on the q-tip first.)
Good luck with your kitty!

ya he goes to the vet in december to get fixed and have his shots, if i can wait that long then i can take care of everything at one time, as the vet is 30 miles away and i am gas money challenged :( so any home remedies would be helpful...thanks in advance

hmm... I'm not too sure about he mild oil... Have you been to this site?
http://www.dr-dan.com/earmites.htm
it describes a way to get rid of ear mites.
But if you aren't too comfortable with that, you mainly have to go to the vet to fully get rid of them since the medicines are usually only available through the vets.
Good luck!

Mineral oil is not recommended for getting rid of ear mites.
I have Bio-Groom Ear Mite Treatment you can get it at any pet store or Wal-Mart.
It clears there ears up quite nicely.
Im in Canada and it costed me 10 bucks..so probably cheaper if u are in the us or where ever.

Hi,
My cat has a lot of wax in her ears and sometimes i see a ball of black wax on her ear flaps. it sounds like ear mites. is this bio-groom thing safe? i am so afraid to give her any ear mite medicine because the last time i bought medicine at a pet store it was hartz flea treatment and she hda a bad reaction to it.
i bought some ear cleaner (non toxic) stuff to clean her ears out a couple times and then i planned to put in an ear mite medicine. someone suggested ear mite remedy by a company called 8 in 1.
i just dont want this stuff to kill my cat like hartz almost did. any input please. she is terrible to bring to the vet. she bit him bad last time. she acts like a wild stray but she is not.
HELP?

I'd just like to point out that just because there is wax buildup doesn't mean that the cat has earmites. If you don't clean your cats ears regularly, then the wax builds up anyway. I recently took my babe to the vet and suspected earmites because of the wax, but she didn't have them. That wax needs to be looked at by a vet with a hot light (which lures the mites out of the wax), and if that doesn't work, under a microscope, to be sure it is mites. In the case of itching along with it, if the itch is persistant, than it probably is mites. I really wouldn't trust the Wal-Mart brands, but that is just me. I would go to the vet. BTW---you would get more responses if you had started a new thread instead of reviving an old one :)

thanks.
i am not sure if it is mites either. i ordered the ear cleaning solution online b/c i could not find one anywhere that was just a solution without medicine in it. i am going to do that first (the directions say h ow often to do it at first and then to decrease it to once week or once every two weeks. i will see if this makes the problem better. i do not see anything in her ear. just pieces of hair and wax. no coffee grinds or dirt. i will just use a ear cleaning solution. if in the next couple of weeks it does not better i will ask the vet to see her. i am not going to use any over the counter stuff.
thanks so much. i usually do start a new thread dont know why i didn't this time but you helped me anyway. thanks!
