Sometimes hermit crabs change shells when you are not there and then decide that he liked his orginal shell better, so he'll go back to his orginal shell.

Most often they won't change shells until they feel safe. They are nocturnal so most shell changes will be at night. The crab will change shells when its ready and not before. Some species such as Ecuadorian's that rarely change shells.

I've had my Purple pincers for five months and none of them have changed. They have lovely shells should they decide to make a change but they like their current shells just fine. Never force a crab to make a change they will when they are ready.
