Hi!

I got my first cockatiel about a week ago. It's a hand-fed male cinnimon grey. Although he's hand-fed, he act as though he were wild caught! It's been a week now and he still won't stay calm when I'm near him. All week I've been reading books and talking to him. He's a little ajusted but still not tame. I tried to handle him but when I got near the cage, he started fluttering around. I was afraid he was going to hurt himself, so I didn't try that again. My friend got a bird (quaker) that was hand-fed and she was able to be handled the very first day. Are all hand-fed cockatiels this jumpy when you first get them? He should be used to humans and not fear them, since he grew up with them. He wasn't pulled from the nesting box, I know that. Please tell me if this is normal and any taming tips would be great. Thanks!

- Andrew

P.S.
By the way, he's still young and has a touch of grey on his beak.

Hi just because he was hand fed it does not mean he will be tame. He may just be a little jumping because it is a new environment and different people. You must give him time to adjust, offer him treats and talk to him quietly. It may take some time but it will be worth it in the end. If his cage is in a loud busy room it may be a bit overwhelming; move him to a quieter room.Good luck. If you need more help email me http://petshub.com/ubb/tongue.gif

All birds are different!! You just happened to get a really scarededy, nervous bird:P go very slow with him, try different methods and eventually he will let u handle him. i would suggest talking to him often and putting your hand in the cage, without any quick movements towards him, and just lay it there until he calms down. then take out your hand. do this twice and day, and soon he wont care if ur hand is there:-) this may take alot of time tho,..... be prepared to do this for months before he steps up onto your hand without flying off!!!
hope I helped,
