 My daughter has a hermit crab. I don't know if he is molting or has died. He is hard and does not have a smell. When you hold the crab upside down he falls partialy out. Is he dead or molting?

It sound like he has died. Is there a liquid coming out when you hold him upside down?

There is no liquid coming out of his shell. So you think he is dead?

When you pick him up does he move at all?

If he doesn't smell, leave him be another day or so to be sure. If you picked him up while he was pushing off his exoskeleton, he may have died from stress. If the body seems light and hollow, its molting. You should be able to see the crab way back in the shell if it molted. Its body will be soft and pink.

You don't need to repeat everything you said in the first post, we already know what the topic is about ( it looks like your a new member). And I would think he has probably died. :(

:crybucket Thank you for in the information. I am new to the web site. I was getting the information for my daughter. Joe Joe the Super crab was a nice crab. She had him trained to come out of his shell when she called him. I think I need to invest in a heater that goes under the tank. He may have gotten too cold. He other crab is very shy and we don't see him come out much. He comes out when everyone is sleeping. Thank again for replying.

Do you have a enough humility in the tank?

I don't think I do. It is a 10 gallon tank with calci sand and a few shells. It also has a sponge, food and water bowls, a wire fence for climbing and some sticks to climb on as well. I keep my daughters room at 75 and also use a lamp to heat the tank. I think I have some shopping to do before I get anymore crabs.

If room temperature is 75, I wouldn't think you would need a heat lamp. You may not even need an undertank heater if the temp in the tank is consistent w/ room temp. It sounds like the humidity is more of a problem, especially since lamps can be drying. The sponge will help, you might get a water dish with a wide surface if you haven't already to increase evaporation, and put a glass cover (cracked a little to allow air flow) over the cage to retain humidity if your tank has a screen cover. You shouldn't have water rolling down the sides, but you want it to feel warm and humid when you stick your hand in there.

Sorry to hear about Joe Joe. Go ahead and get the tank stable and then get your other crab a friend so it won't get lonely. Besides, they're more fun to watch when you have more than one.

kpkis check out this site www.hermit-crabs.com for all the essentials. You definitely have some shopping to do before getting more crabs!

Hermit crabs are nocturnal so being active at night and sleeping all day is normal.

I have a screen cover on my hermit's tank. I keep a damp wash cloth on top to ensure there is enough humidity.
