PLEASE READ .....Dwarf Hammies

I just took 2 drawf baby hammies from my aquatences female dwarf who had babies never dealt with dwarfs before, need advice immediatly..the babies were going to be flushed if i didnt take them! REALLY CUTE!

First off you need to find out the sex of the babies so you don't end up with more babies. How old are they? Where they old enough to be taken from Mom?

they are 7 weeks, im pretty sure one is female, and the other im really not to sure..hard to tell compared to syrians. Im thinking they were old enough they are eatting hamster food..so im sure they are good..they are kind of vicious though. they nip and bite.

well they are old enough to mate...so if you can't tell take them to someone that can tell the sex. I had to take mine to the vet to know for sure. Dwarf hamsters don't stay tame like syrians and I am guessing they have been handled much since someone was willing to flush them. You will have to try and handle them everyday for awhile. Sometimes it is easier to pick them up with gloves or let them crawl into a tub and put them in your hand. Wash your hands before trying to pick them up that sometimes helps.

Well i tried holding them, and the bigger one bit me :( but ill try gloves or something they are soo tiny ill post a pic when i get a chance.

It takes practice to correctly and gently scruff a dwarf so that they can't bite you and so you can sex them.

I once used a Q-Tip to move fur away to sex them. Usually, if you see two distinct opening it is a male.

I have a nice picture of a male campbell's dwarf I took for a website of a friend. I'll post it for you when I get home (it's in my home's computer). I still haven't been able to take a clear picture of a female, but when I'm home I'll try again to take one for you. 7 weeks is old enough to be separated from mom and tell sex. I had to separate last litter I had from mom when they were 4 weeks cause she went overwhelmed with the 4 babies plus the male and started attacking everybody. After I separated the babies she calmed down, and all the babies did very well alone. The pic I have was taken at around 7-8 weeks and the testicles are pretty clear. I'll post it for you later.

Thanks padfoot, im a lil nervous about picking them up they are pretty freaked even before i brought them home..ill try to sex them today and see what i have..:) Ill keep ya posted.

I still can get a very good close up, but they look like they both might be girls, maybe they arent dwarfs?? they are soo tiny, k im gonna post a picture of them right away

OMG! I found the most awesome site for sexing hamster, i have a boy and a girl..the bigger one the bit me is a boy, and the tinier one is a girl. Here are the pictures hopefully this helps anyone sexing hamsters whether syrians or dwarfs!

Actually... I think they are campbells or winter whites... look at the tail. Chinese have a pretty long tail for a hamster your's don't seem to have such a long tail... plus look a bit chubby... chinese are more longish... Do they have furry feet?

ahh.. that's harder to tell.. specially since I've only seen campbells in person and they are so similar. They could even be a hybrid of the two, who knows...

I thought they were chinese..i called my bubs bub who gave them to me and he said he was pretty sure they were campbells dwarfs but he wasnt to sure either...stupid breeders..! people who dont know what they are and breed them is wrong..like the page said if there is hybrids and people continue to breed these guys, the pures are gonna go buh byes...

Im glad they seemed to calm down..I have trouble with my male drwaf hammy he likes to bit my fingers :( andI also have another male dwarf hammie that is blind and he bites tooo ...just have to give some more time with them....altogether I have 10 dwarfs 4 dwarf females they are 1 month and a half old and 5 males also a month and a half old....2 females are blind too..but they are still cute they get around just fine with their little nose's hehe :) they love to dig in their bedding and toss in around....Its a natural instint for dwarfs to do that....:).

Took them to vet for check-up :) THEY ARE GREAT! and campbells dwarfs as padfoot said..gee your great padfoot :) lots of love to ya..so healthy guys, and the vet says i can keep them in the same cage for a lil longer, turns out they are only 5 weeks :O but they are muh babys and i love them soooooooooooooooooooooo much!

Still havent thought of a name..might have to call them pebbles and bam bam lol

They're definitely Campbells because I had one that looked exactly like those two (Furblur) and she was a Campbell. They're really cute! Have you named them yet?
