Not always. One of my favorite horses when I started riding again was a little Polish Arab named Buddy. Great horse.

In general stock horses tend to be calmer, as to drafts. A Quarter Horse or a draft cross might be an excellent idea. See if you can find one who's already trained to be hunted off of or used to cowboy mounted shooting. That way they'll be used to gunfire already.

I have 4 arabains I would never put someone that didn't know how to ride on any of them.
Afriend has 14 and would not sell or let ride if you didn't know how to ride.

That's your Arabs. I've had the benefit of knowing several 'non-psycho' Arabs and Thoroughbreds and have enjoyed their company.

The best thing to do would be to find a horse for sale, and go try it out to see if you can handle it. The one you are most able to handle and bond with is the 'best' one for you.

My horses are not PSYCHO. You can not shoot a gun off of them.I have rope and done game show with my horses and we have also shown are horses.
you can go to our website and see some of horses.
why would you call them PSYCHO just because I will not put someone that did not know how to ride on any of our horses..My husband was in a lawsuit because his daughter and friend went rideing because the friend told them that she know how to ride and fell off the horse it was HER felt not the HORSES so that is why we don't let people ride our horses.
so before you call people horses that you have never meet PSYCHO found out WHY..........

Nowhere did I say your Arabs were psycho. Notice also that 'psycho' is in quotation marks. I'm a fan of the intelligence of the Arabian breed and the athleticism of Thoroughbreds. Both qualities gets these breeds labeled as 'psychos' by the unknowing. I know better.

Nowhere in this conversation were lawsuits mentioned. So you saying to avoid Arabs then saying you do not allow beginners on yours leads us to believe your horses, either by training or by nature, are not suitable for beginners. The 'non-psycho' comment (again in quotation marks) was simply me pointing out that I've known many safe and fun Arabs that were just fine for beginners.

Hopefully I've cleared a few things up now. :-)

Who's fighting? I made a big effort to be non-confrontational...I didn't think anyone was fighting.

Anyway, yes. I have horses too. Right now I just have three at my place, two Quarter Horses (real ones) and a Paint. I'm also in a partnership with my friend who breeds them. I help out around the farm and do some training for her.

Real ones, as in real honest-to-bob working Quarter Horses. It's hard for me to think of the types you see in the HUS and Halter rings as 'real' Quarter Horses, since they can't do anything stock horses are really meant to do!

I love Arabs, too! I almost bought a lovely Polish mare last summer, but she died in colic surgery just before I sent my downpayment. Yikes!

I looked at your horses...very nice! I'll have to dig up a few pics of mine later.

It's okay. I have a few of them saved here on PetsHub, but here's what I've got handy.

This is my current herd. Left to right is Mick, Max, and Misty. Mick was a working horse but he's lame and retired now (belongs to my mom). Max is a BS Paint who's here for 'kindergarten' training, and Misty is with me on a breedlease.

This is my TB mare I sold a few months ago, smiling at the camera. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v11/Mussytang/Critters/serinsmile.jpg

Here's another of Misty. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v11/Mussytang/Critters/misty1j.jpg

Skip, my friend's QH stud. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v11/Mussytang/Critters/skipchunck.jpg

Another of Skip, 'cause he's purdy. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v11/Mussytang/Critters/skiphead2j.jpg

From what i have read on horses, there personality varys, meaning you could get a horse that is "suposed" to be very calm, but actualy is very high strung. I would go around all the places where horses are for sale, ride them, and pick the one you think is right for you :)

I've known a few, and they were all completely bomb-proof. But as a rule, ability to handle gun shooting will vary from horse to horse, not necessarily breed to breed.
