I need info on breeding guppys I need to know how to tell them boy or girl and how to breed them and what to do with the babys. I have a guppy trap it floats in the aquarium and you put the mommy guppy in it and when she has babys they go through the crack and the mommy can't eat them. How do you know if they are prego

When guppies are pregnant, they get really large and, if they have a light coloured body, they get a black spot behind their anal fin. There are 2 ways to tell the females from the males. The males have brighter colours, and bigger tails, and the females are larger in body, and have less colours. As well, the male has a modified anal fin, called a gonopodium, which sticks back like an arrow. He will only move this fin when he is insiminating the female. To breed them just leave males and females loose in the tank together, and they will do the rest. Since you don't seem to know much about guppies, i assume you aren't doing selective breeding. The babies will need a separate tank to grow in until they are about 3 months old. Then they can be released in with the parents. Or you can leave them loose and see if the parents will eat them.

Here are some links that might help. The top one might be the most useful as it isn't geared towards breeding fancy show guppies.

Another way to keep the babies in the tanks with the moms is to put what is called Breeder grass in the bottem of the tank. When the babies are born they swim down and stay there till they are bigger and won't be eaten. Word of warning tho when we bred we started out with about 15 5 males and 10 females. We ended up with over 50!!! But they are fun and cute.

Have fun.
