I recently decided to get myself a female russian dwarf hamster (last saturday).

However, then read that dwarf hamsters were lonely on their own, and should be kept in groups, so went to the pet shop, and bought what I was told were 2 females.

After a day together they were fine, but last night just before I went to bed I saw a fight break out between one of the new hamsters and the old ones.

I seperated them at once, and put the old hamster into my old cage.

I tried putting the 2 that fought in together today, and fighting broke out imediately, so I am now resigned to the fact that the hamsters can never go back together.

Then I looked up dwarfs fighting and read that fighting usually occurs between a male and a female, and so tried to determine the sexes of the hamsters (but to no avail).

I would be happy for the hamsters to mate, as I have plenty of spare cages, and would love to have more hamsters, but I was wondering if it were possible, as the 2 new hamsters came from the same litter, and I wasn't sure wether they would mate.

The hamsters are just over 2 months, and very fat.

One of them spends all day in the wheel, and one of them sits in its nest, and only leaves for food and water.

Could anybody help me determine the sexes based on their activities, and answer my questions.

It would be much appreciated.

You can't determine sexes based on their activities.. I do have a picture of a male dwarf and someone posted a good sexing picture... If they are sibbling I wouldn't mate them. They would mate, but they share so many genes that you have a high probability of having hamsters born with defects or genetically transmited diseases. Here is the male hamster picture:
