Fat Hamster

I have the best hamster ever. He looks forward to play time and he crawls willingly on your hand, he is so tame and so cute! But he's getting really fat, I think I spoil him on nuts and treats :-\. How do I thin him down without depressing him? He's also really old too, and I'm scared so I need to watch out for his health.

For clarification, he is SO FAT. He's actually round. I dont' know if this is necessarily bad during these cold winter months, but what health problems arise? I could just give him the pellet stuff and more time in the ball, but he seems so happy.

Oh and this is an unrelated question, kidn of weird but what does hamster diaherrea look like??? I saw this hamster at the store today that pooped yellow loose droppings but it wasn't runny or anything. Sorry if that was graphic.
