My hamster Cleo, has been in the same cage with one of my boy hamsters for a while now on and off. I had to seperate them, because they started to fight. Now Cleo is taking some of her bedding and stuffing it into her little tiki hut thingy. She stays in there and barely comes out. She has piled it up so high that she has closed herself in except for a little hole she left to breath. I am not sure if she is building a nest to have babies or not. Can someone help? Here is a picture of cleo and brownie together. http://images.andale.com/f2/106/128/6955531/1103523951464_hamsters.jpg

What do you expect people to say??
Obviously that sounds just like a nest for babies - unless she is very cold and needs a warm place to sleep.

Obviously, if you are keeping a male and female together they are going to have babies, and obviously it is your responsibility to care for all of them.
Obviously, if you are keeping Syrian hamsters together for any length of time they ARE GOING TO FIGHT. Adults should never be kept together, except for mating, and why anyone would want to mate and breed hamsters with so many unwanted and unloved hamsters in rescue shelters (or injured ones in pet stores) I know not.
You did not bother to tell us if they are dwarfs or Syrians.
You don't seem to know what you're doing, but you can learn, and if you love the babies that is what counts.

This is CatieCats Mother, and I have to say what a terribly hateful and rude response ! She asked an innocent , honest question, what on earth do you hope to gain by responding to her in this way ???

Well since u have had them together, chances are she will have babies, and judging by the picture she is a very beautiful syrian..they are very territorial and once they hit the age of 8 weeks they can kill each other...although..some have been known to be able to live together...please do not try thing..its not worth your hamsters life.
So a lil information to help ya out...
First of all mating...
Usually, the mating process should last for about 20 to 30 minutes, and remember... female hamsters go into heat every 4 days. Therefore, if your female hamster does not go into heat anymore, she's most likely pregnant. You can test this by stroking her back towards her tail. If she is in heat, she will 'freeze' to the floor with her tail pointing in the air. If she doesn't freeze, then she's probably pregnant.
Second IF she is pregnant..
If the mating was successful, simply continue to feed her her regular hamster food. It's also a good idea to give her a few high protein treats during this time... small pieces of bread soaked in milk are great, and so are small pieces of boiled eggs, or chicken, etc. For the nesting material, the one I've found to work the best is just regular unscented undyed toilet paper. This works great and allows your hamster to build a nest as large as she wants. You can shred it for her or just give her a couple of sheets and she'll shred it herself.
After the Pups are born...
Don't disturb the babies until they're about 2 weeks old and have their eyes open. At that point, you can clean out the cage.
Then, at about 3-4 weeks, you'll need to split the pups into a boys' cage and a girls' cage, as hamsters become sexually mature at a very young age.
At 5-6 weeks then can be given to there selected homes :)
Hope this helps if u need more information u can mail me at tiamaria@shaw.ca
