I don't do e-mails.
Hating a hamster is selfish and stupid. Even worse is killing one.
I have 12 Syrian hamsters here; I have had about that many for years. I have been biten (with blood) TWICE - and each time it was my fault for doing something careless (such as surprising them).
My point: they are very docile and friendly. You are clearly doing something wrong or not showing enough patience, or not giving the animal enough peace and quiet (and a dark safe place to sleep) during the day.
Never wake them up; never grab them from above and behind; never surprise them - let them know you are there; offer them treats from your hand; talk to them all the time so they associate your voice with something nice; give them toys to explore and play with; give them a good safe (no rungs) wheel; give them plenty of bedding material for a warm nest in cooler weather; and show lots of patience.
I see no way a healthy hamster could act like that if you treat them right. I have had dozens and every one i could safely kiss on the nose.
Patience, and love!

Some hamsters will bite. It is very rare, but some will just bite.
I have a dwarf hamster, Beady, that trys to bite every time I put my hand in the cage. He was abused the first year of his life and has never gotten over that. I do not hold Beady. . . he will not let me. I hand feed him treats, make sure his food bowl is full, change his bedding, change his water twice a week. . . everything he needs. If your hamster wont let you hold him, ok. Then just don't hold him. But to put a healthy hamster to sleep is just plain wrong.

my hammy use to bite but a little love and time given into taimming her made her harmless. And maybe if you spend more time talking to her(instead of taking her out of the cage)and in future shell trust you and you can pick her upp.But it does take time.Trust me it worked for both of my hamsters.

We had a hamster (Syrian (Mesocricetus auratus)until two weeks ago, and it was very tame. It must have been a very tame member of the species, the vet said, because it didn't even try to bite when it was in a lot of pain at the vet's! When it got really sick, it used it's last strength to climb into my hand to be taken out of the cage. :hamster1:
It belonged to my daughter, aged six, but I was always very particular that she didn't take it out when it was asleep. This meant that it was mostly me who took it out. In my opinion, they don't make the best pets for small children, because they need many hours of uninterrupted sleep, and will tend to get grumpy if they are woken up too much. They are nocturnal, and you need to let them sleep during the day. We kept the hamster in our living-room, this way it got used to our noises, but the most boisterous games (two kids!) were not allowed in the living room. The cage was next to my TV-chair, so I would always see her when she came out in the evening, and could let her come out.
Have patience, let the animal sleep undisturbed, and talk quietly to it, and you may be lucky, but some hamsters (I've heard) just plain bite. I've had three so far, and the only time I was bitten (!), and that was not through the skin, was when this last hamster was force-fed its medicine on the last day it lived. It was in a lot of pain at that stage, poor thing! We loved the cute little thing, but we're sticking to guinea pigs from now on, as they are day-animals.

the alternative is just to do what i do with my hamsters as soon as i get them, and that is to REMOVE THE TEETH. a small pair of needle nose pliers should do the trick, a quick and painless strategy to save yourself the pain and frustration of hamster bites!

How do you expect your hamsters to eat properly if you remove their teeth? No, I agree with the person who said that hamsters usually only bite if you startle them etc.
I'm tempted to think you're joking, especially since you suggested cutting gerbil-pups eyes open on day 10! (See gerbil-forum)

What is this guy some idiot? I've never ever had a hamster that WASN'T biting. After a while, SOME of them learn to not bite, but every single one i've ever seen has been biting as soon as they were out of the pet store, and some of them never stop biting, even after all taming techniques have been applied. After monitoring a fair number of his posts, it is my belief that this Zouave character is merely a simple troll trying to stir up the board rather than actually answering the question of the poor girl who asked it.

Alycia I hope you haven't done anything drastic just yet! I've had encounters with a lot of biting hamsters (coincidently, they all seem to be dwarves) but have found a few mothods that work. First of all, try wearing an old pair of leather gloves or gardening gloves. These will protect you and your 4.5 fingers as well as give the hamster a chance to get used to being handled. Some hamsters have had very bad experiences in the past, and simply need to get used to the fact you wont hurt it. Hamsters do not have memory spans as long as humans do, and often will more easily get over past abuse. I've also known a more contraversial method of taming that I might be screamed at for, but there's no real harm and is def. a preferable alternative to euthanasia. You'll just have a lot more work to do...
Just let your hamster know that you are its provider. You want to show the hamster that you will never harm it, and you want it to associate your presence with food, treats, and freedom. Here's how you do this with malicious biters:
Always wear gloves at first. Remove the hamster's food bowl and toys. Always provide fresh water though! Everyday at approximately the same times, HAND FEED your hamster. At first just feed it through the cage, either thru bars or by putting your hand through the door. Be slow and gentle. If you're not calm, you're hamster won't be. When it lashes at you or bites, do not pull back. It can't hurt you through your gloves, and pulling away will only teach it that if it wants to avoid contact it should hurt you. A few days of this and your hamster will take food from your hand, either through trust or hunger since you are its only food source. Do not give it more food until it has eaten what you've give it so that it won't build up a cache.
When this is going smoothly, try hand feeding without gloves. Also (with gloves) gradually coax it into sitting in your hand and don't let go of the food/treat until he's sitting comfortably in your steady hand. After he's comfortable with this routine, you can take him out of the cage. Most hamsters will not be hostile once they are out of their own territory, so at this point the gloves shouldn't be needed. Now only feed him when he sits in your hand outside. The lack of toys in the cage will cause the hamster to get bored, so once it trusts your hand and sees it as the elevator out, he will be more willing (and sometimes even request) to have you pick him up to play. Don't remove his wheel as they need the exercise for health reasons.
Until he is tame when you have to take him out of the cage, use a styrafoam cup or a cardboard tube to take him out of the cage. Avoid doing this frivilously as your hamster will be frightened and stressed by this process. Make sure you don't STARVE your hamster, you're still giving him enough food but the difference is you're FEEDING rather than providing food. With time and patience this will all pay off. Who knows, having the contrast of your loving ownership and its past horrors, you might find your little guy will make and even stronger bond with you then any other could! Goodluck and remember to be kind and patient.

And people I really wouldn't worry too much about Gerbil person's comment. I wouldn't imagine it'd be too pleasant to try and hold open an already bitey hamster's mouth, much less with one hand while attacking it with pliers. Rodents' teeth are an integral part of their bone structure, and 'pulling out its teeth' would not only be a painful experience for the person but physically impossible without breaking the teeth off. I'm sure it was a sick joke and he's already been banned for it.

To ignore the trolls or not?
The problem with people that give this kind of advice is that you really don't know:
Is it a sick joke, or are they severely misguided, actually do this to their animals and pass this on as advice? Sick jokers should be ignored, and not encouraged, but on the other han when someone has started a serious thread out of real concern for their pet, it's important that the rest of us pipe up and at least make it very clear that it is not an acceptable way out!
Now, here's a more acceptable hamster-joke: "Where do hamsters come from?" "Hamsterdam!" (Quote my son of 8, who had no idea there is a city called Amsterdam...)
It's a good thing this person was banned. What if someone actually took him seriously!

We should probably get this thread back to the hamster in question!
Alycia. Have you taking the hamster to the vet for a check-up? It might have some ailment that is causing irritation and the biting!
I had a guinea pig once that suddenly started biting, and we didn't manage to do anything about it so we put her to sleep in the end. It was so sad, and I felt really horrible. Then, we found a vet who told us that he was pretty sure that the problem was hormonal, and that the animal had had cysts that could have been removed. That made us feel even worse! This might be the case with hamsters as well (?). Anyway, a visit to the vet will at least eliminate medical causes!
Good luck with the little one.

boy that was reeeaaaaly hard to get back on here, yes i can read all your comments and the fact is that removing the teeth is very possible by wearing gloves, holding his lips open with one hand while using pliers to break off the teeth with the other hand...there is still a small bit of his teeth left over for chewing, and what does he need them for self defense for? who is he defending from? me! thats the problem, i dont want him having self defense against me.....now on to the issue of people reporting me and banning me just for posting an alternative to hamster bites.....just because you people dont like what my method is dosent give you the right to decide whats wrong or unethical....you are not the animal treatment corrections board, and it is frustrating to post my ideas and be banned....if i am reported and banned again, i will once again EASILY come back on the forum on a different name, and then WITHOUT WARNING, go into an innocent forum and post CLOSE-UP PHOTOS of de-toothed hamsters....you little kiddies and squeamish types will cringe and not know its there until its too late and you open another forum and see them....if you want to avoid this simply stop reporting me for posting what i believe to be correct ideas!

Gloves are an easily solution, it prevents you from feeling the bite, although you can feel them

Every hamster that I had ever gotten when i was younger always bit me also. Until my neighbor bred hers and gave a little girl to me, she was very nice. I believe that most hamsters you buy at the pet store are not very well tamed. If you want to make sure you want a nice tempered one, it is best to get it from a private breeder. In your case, I just think the hamster hasnt been handled properly and it could be too late to do anything about it. sorry :(

People breed their hamsters and dont touch them. Most of them end up giving them to a pet store becuase they arent nice. If you buy a hamster untamed, you can tame it while it is still a baby , but if it is an adult however, the percentages are lower and it is much harder to tame. Rarely, Some will always bite since they were babys no matter how well you treat it.

That is absolute nonsense.
The only beings that "aren't nice" are these people who foolishly breed their animals - and then come on this forum asking us "what should I do with the babies??"!! .

Gerbilperson, maybe you should take yourself down to the doctors and have your tongue pulled out with pliars, as no one wants to here you, so whats the use of having a tongue, to talk to us??????????
As for the original thread, I have had very few bites, but when I first got my hamster cutie, she bit me more times than all my other hamsters combined. She was fine when I had her on the chair with me, as soon as I gave her some freedom on the front room then tried to pick her up, biiiiiiitttttttteee, lol. After a little while she got used to me handling her, I most probably let her have the run around of the living room to soon. I would say if you have him on the chair with you, stroke him gently, offer him treats so that he knows your hands are good things, and when he runs along, place your hand flat in front of him he will most probably try to avoid running over it but move it around him and do this for awhile, whenever you get him out, and he'll get used to yours hands and they will eventually not seem such a threat to him. Remember he only bites because he is afraid, imagine King Kong picking you up all the time out of the blue, lol. Good luck

My hamsters always bit me, but it's no reason to hate them.
You have to handle them gently, just as any animal.
Just last night I was trying to introduce two gerbils, and i was holding one in each hand when Kurt [one of my favorite gerbils] freaked out and bit me, and she was hanging off my finger for quite a good two minutes. I got her off, and boy am I a bleeder lol. There was blood all over my floor... but right after that, I held Kurt and pet her since I felt bad for like flinging her off my finger lol.. She's still one of my favorite gerbils, and she's so used to me<3 It took her awhile to get used to me... I got her back in July... and just now she's perfectly fine with me. I can hold her any way, and kiss her =] Layne's used to me too... he gives me kisses! I went to kiss his nose and he started licking my mouth hahaha... maybe I just taste good o.O
But you just have to let them get to know you. Don't say you hate your animal.

wow, i've been bit by one of my hamsters before, he totally freaked me out, and i kinda tossed him, and he fell to the ground, but he was alright, i think it was my first time being bit by a hamster. i thought it was my fault though, i cos i think i might've shoved my hand in his mouth or something when i was holding him, but it did draw ALOT of blood from my thumb

You need to use a "split cage" to introduce two gerbils. A direct introduction of two gerbils usually leads to a bad fight. And a gerbil in a fight will chomp anything that touches it.

oh I know I need a split cage lol. I've introduced many gerbils before. I was just holding both of them about to put them in. I accidentally held them too close lol.

Ha. I agree. I've owned two dwarf hamsters that had lived together and two syrians at different times. The syrians were great, pretty docile if you didn't suprise them. One of my dwarfs on the other hand, was a HOTHEAD. She would lunge and bite me when I attempted to put food in her bowel... lol.

Actually she was like that with everything... but I guess her behavior would be reasonable since my hand probably appeared scary and threatening. My syrians were never that agressive though.

thats weird that dwarf hamsters are moodier cuz i have a male dwarf hamster named marbles and he is the most laid back hamster i have ever seen. he is also my first hamster. i got him from my cousins for a graduation present lol. he's the sweetest hammie in the world. i can pick him right up with no problems and he'll crawl all over me. and loves to eat treats out of my hand. he even slept in my hand once.
so every time i read these threads about people talking about all these evil flesh eating hamsters (sarcastic) it's so shocking to me lol. i also had my big boy since he was like 4 or 5 weeks old. he never once bit me or anything. he only licks my hand lol
