Greeting from Kansas city where we just had the worst ice storm in kansas city history. Bad news for us fish keepers I am afraid, as we lost our power and have had it out for 3 days and counting. It got down to 18 outside and inside it was not much warmer. I got up this morning to have dead fish in all my tanks. Some fish like Sharkie we have had in our family for 10years. He was 22in long and I am sure was about 15pounds or so. Then there was "Tiny" my 15in baby Osphernimse Gormey who had not even reached the half way point. Then there was all the little fish from baby oscars (2) to angel fish to tiny little tetras. All are dead and our house is still freezing.
Is there anything else I could have done to save them? All the pet stores in our area and any family members did not have power so I could not transport them anywhere.

if this ever happens again get blankets or a warm cover and secure them round the tank(s) or try to purchase a battery powered hairdryer and hold it blowing on the water for 5 minutes and this should keep the tank warm for about 15 to 20 minutes

Thanks for the advice. As it turns out the power was out 4 1/2 days. Burrr it was so cold that week. As for the hair dryer I will try that if it ever happens again however as we have 9 tanks in the house I don't know how well that would work. Do they make battery powered heaters for the tanks? If not someone should.
Also I would have done the blanket thing but the humans used every one and the stores were sold out we did not even have as many as we needed for the people. :cold:

Thanks again,
