Sizzgle I suggest a neutered male. Gliders are best kept in pairs but if you have lots of time a single one can work out just great! :) It's wonderful to see that you are doing research first! My male is not neutered and he smells a little. He is very loving and not at all agressive. Males are usually more of cuddle bugs. That's just from my expeierence tho. It really depends on the glider. I hope this helps!

Frankie how old is your glider? Do you mean that he is biting when he is scared or just nipping? To get him to stop (ONLY if he is just nipping/playing around and NOT if he is scared) I would blow very gently in his face. This usually works for me. I have however been told that this could harm the bonding process but I do have to say my baby is so bonded to me it is unreal. I hope this helps!

Emcanoe I have one glider and i worry about him being lonley all the time. Like I said I reccomend that you get a pair. A pair is not any more work to take care of. It is actually less work for you! lol

Frankie It would be better to get a female and get him neurered. Since gliders can't just be thrown togehter most of the time you might need a spare cage to keep her in. You could get another male but BOTH of them would have to be neutered or else they will have dominate issues and will end up fighting and getting hurt. So I would get your current glider neutered and then get a female. The bonding would go a LOT easier then getting another neutered male too. I hope this helps!!!!!!

Hi,
I have a male glider who's fairly bonded but is very territorial when he has food.I hand feed him and iv never taken it, but he still hasn't gotten any better. Is their a way for him to losen up?

Emylee
02-18-05, 12:23 PM 02-18-05
How long have you had him? What kind of home was he in previous to coming to you? Whatdiet is he on? Has he had a checkup recently? There could be numerous reasons why he is territorial with his food. He could be agressive because he is going through sexual maturity, or because he is ill. Is he neutered? How old is he? If you wanna chat sometime about your glider here is my MSN EmyleeShadow04@hotmail.com You can IM me. If you have AOL here is mine as well EmyleeShadow Let me know how hes doing.

Ok, I know this is Emylee's thread, but she's not on at the moment, so I'll just jump in.

Its usually best to get a joey for a first glider, they bond easier. The cost for a normal colored glider is usually between $150-$200. If you wanted to get into color variations, you could get a cinnamon for $200-$225, but some colors can cost thousands of dollars! You'll need a large cage for them, 2'x2'x3' is the minimum, it can house up to 2 gliders. Then you'll have to buy all the supplies, so they are pretty expensive.

They can be aggressive, but you usually will only run into that problem if you buy from a pet store or get an older glider that was misstreated or not handled. It's best to buy from a reputable breeder, one that doesn't have too many breeding pairs and handles all the joeys daily.

They need a LOT of attention. You should carry them in a bonding pouch for a few hours daily, so they can get used to being around you and your scent. You need to play with the gliders for about 2 hours everynight (they're nocturnal, so you have to stay up pretty late) If you only get one glider, you should play with it more than that, you are the only interaction and company it will get. They are best kept in pairs, they are very social animals, but its alright to keep them alone if you have the time, and also many people buy one, think they have the time, and end up getting another to make it easier.

It's pretty hard to take care of them, because they are exotic. You have to have a specific diet, have to have the room at a specific temperature, check toys and pouches constantly for anything that they could get hurt on, be willing to rush it to the vet for late night emergencies (they hide their illness very well, so at the first sign, you have to take them in, or it will probably be too late), have the money to spoil them like you of course will want to, etc.

Like I said, they need a big cage, and they should have out of cage play time almost everyday, either in a tent or in a glider-proofed room.

Pairs are best, but like I said, you can keep only one if you're up to the commitment.

They can be friendly, if you go through bonding processes. Look that up on Google or something, this is very important if you want a nice pet.

If you see a bag/box of sugar glider food at a pet store DO NOT BUY IT!! It is probably a parrot diet repackaged. It's no where near enough. You'd need to give them a proven diet, like BML or Suncoast's ZooKeeper's Secret (ZKS is prepackaged, and you have to make BML) plus give them fruits and veggies everynight. Also they need protein, like mealworms, crickets, chicken, cottage cheese, yogurt, turkey, etc.

Warm or cold water doesn't really matter, room temp is fine, they'll drink out of a water bottle so provide fresh water daily.

You have to supervise them in a glider-proofed room if you let them out. They will find a million places to hide that you never thought possible and its very easy to loose them.

They don't need to be bathed, they'll keep themselve's plenty clean.

If you have any other questions feel free to ask, or find some good informational sites.

well im not sure how to get a sugar glider *very rare in washington!* but ill probally start off with one so my first question is after having one for awhile...can i introduce anouther? and my second is, that i leave for school around 8:10am * i do have lots of time to give it attention in the morning if its awake* and then ill get home around 3-3:30pm and after thtat i have almost all the time in the world, and i stay up late too, are they nocturnal? and is my schedule not good enough for the glider? sence it will be alone for nearly 6 hours....of the day

Chinchilla253
02-27-05, 02:14 PM 02-27-05
ok i read the above and i got the nocturnal thing down :-P but is m schedule still good enough for me to keep one

Emylee
02-27-05, 02:27 PM 02-27-05
Yes, you can introduce them to eachother, but if I were you I would start off with 2 joeys. The reason being is that you would have to buy 2 cages 9very expensive) instead of one if you are going to introduce them. Introductions can be tricky, so as a new owner it would be better to get a pair. Your schedule sounds fine to me. :) What I do is I play with my baby from 8PM to 11 PM at night, and then I get up at 5 every other day and play with him for a few more hours. It actually sounds like a glider would be a great pet for you if you stay up late. Have you picked out a diet? What about a cage? 3 foot tall is the smallest, and you want to make sure that it is PVC coated. I hope this helps and here is my MNS IM just incase

EmyleeShadow04@hotmail.com

Chinchilla253
02-27-05, 02:34 PM 02-27-05
thats good, um we may have to buy a special cage... but we have a cage that we used for are bird is a preety large $500 bird cage its tall, much taller than 3 feet... would that work? im not sure what PVC is :P but it a matel cage but with something over it tht is the color green *green just for looks i believe* it dosnt look like a plastic or anything but yeah. and i did decide to get two, it would definetly help, and it seems that breeders really encourage that.

Emylee
02-27-05, 02:42 PM 02-27-05
Nope! That green isn't just for looks. :) That's to protect birds, and that would be either PVC or a powder finish so that is perfectly fine. Sound like an awesome cage, is the bar spacing no bigger then 1/2 inch? That is really important... my gliders first cage was a little bigger then that and I had to buy him a different one because he could get out.

Chinchilla253
02-27-05, 02:48 PM 02-27-05
hmm may have to get a diffrent cage, didnt messure it but by the looks it looks bigger than 1/2 inch

Emylee
02-27-05, 02:49 PM 02-27-05
Do you have a picture that you could post? Measure, sometimes it looks bigger then it is. I got my fingers crossed for ya. :) It sounds like an awesome cage... it would be a shame if you couldn't use it.

Chinchilla253
02-27-05, 02:57 PM 02-27-05
i measured it, its over 1/2 inch, its about this wide --------

Emylee
02-27-05, 03:01 PM 02-27-05
Are the bard horizontal or vertical or both? If it is both then 1 inch by 1/2 inch will work but if it is abird cage then it probaby doesn't have cross bars.

Chinchilla253
02-27-05, 03:05 PM 02-27-05
horizontal bars

Chinchilla253
02-27-05, 03:17 PM 02-27-05
also is it best to get males or females..or both?

Emylee
02-27-05, 03:23 PM 02-27-05
I would get either 2 females or a neutered male and female. I think that getting a neutered male and female would be best but make sure that he is neutered.

Chinchilla253
02-27-05, 03:34 PM 02-27-05
and should they be of the same perant?

Emylee
02-27-05, 03:52 PM 02-27-05
If you are getting the male neutered then it would be better. Siblings already have a bond so it is easier. Just make sure that you don't let them imbreed. That turnd out awful. :(

It really is up to you though

Hi Emylee
Michago again.Right after I emailed you my parents suprised me with a bonded pair of sugar glider.Pockets(my first one, the territorial one)gets along with the female fine.But the new male fights with him.He doesn't like when his mate is with him either.Once when I put Pockets with the female and when we put her back the male started yelling and crabbing at her.Any suggestions\advice

Emylee
03-01-05, 02:30 AM 03-01-05
You need tyo get both of the males neutered before you try putting them together. The males can fight to the death sometimes if they are not. I hope this helps.

glidergrl1513
03-01-05, 06:14 AM 03-01-05
The reason the male crabs at the girl when you put him back in with him after she's been with Pockets is because she's got Pockets's smell on her. Also, until you get them neutered and their hormones settle down (that will take a few months) don't try to introduce them again, not even just with the female, its too stressfull to keep moving them around. And if you can't afford to get them both neutered, or are interested in breeding, you can get one neutered, it should work just as well as getting them both fixed.

lol weird way2manyguppies!

There's a lot of different sounds they make, like Emylee said, and more than just what's in the link, but those are the most common. Not all gliders will crab though, Charlotte hasn't crabbed once, and I've had her since October (plus I get her as an adult) but most likely, they will. Some of them will bark at night, mine go through phases where they will bark all night, and nothing makes them be quiet.

oh gosh yes!!! I get up and let my baby play for an hour and that usually shuts him up but I have to try really hard not to fall asleep while he is out playing. And of course he is not happy playing by himself he has to get me to play with him. LOL He will throw things at me until I entertain him. Who owns whom agian? LOL

How much does it cost?I am interested in breeding and do not want to get both nuetered but do you reccomend it?Can I get it done with any exotic vet?My two males(Pockets and Max)both like my female(Spice) but even though Max and Spice are a bonded pair,Pockets seems much more interested in her.Which one do you think I should nueter?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~
michago, check out WSGN as well. Here is some info on a gliders diet that I have taken off my website.
Sugar gliders need to be fed A PROVEN DIET! I cannot stress this enough! With out the proper diet your little friend WILL eventually get sick and die. The most common illness that is associated with diet is HLP (hind leg paralyses) This illness is caused by lack of calcium. Gliders NEED calcium and if they are being fed foods that are high in phosphorus any calcium that they are getting is canceled out. Foods that are high in phosphorus include: corn, mushrooms, passion fruit etc. For a list if foods and their phosphorous to calcium ration visit this site. http://www.petsugargliders.com/calciumphosphorus.html
One of the most popular diets with gliders is BML. BML consists of food iteams that can be readily bought and is a proven diet. I highly reccomend it because of how easy it is to obtain the ingredients and because it has all of the vitamins already in it. There is no "guess work" with this diet. Here is a list of the items that you will need to make this diet:
Honey
Egg
Apple Juice
Gerber Juice with Yogurt
Rep-cal Herptivite (can be found in the reptile section of most Petsmart's)
Rep-cal Calcium Suppliment non-phosphorus with Vit. D3 (can also be found at Petsmart)
Heinz, Gerber, or Beechnut Chicken baby food
Wheat Germ
Dry Baby Cereal (Heinz or Gerber)
Always feed with a variety of fruits and veggies and mealworms
This diet can be freezed as well and so can the fruits and veggies that you feed. 1 recipe of this mix will last 1 glider 1 month.
And that's it! See how easy it is? Here is the link to the recipe. http://www.sugargliderinfo.com/NutritionAndDiets/leadbeat.html
Another Diet is Darcy's Diet. The ingredients are very easy to get as well. All this Diet consists of is Ensure and a calcium supplement. For every bottle of ensure you add 3/8 teaspoons of Calcium Carbonate. Rep-cal will not work with this diet, I tried. lol It all sinks to the bottom which is NOT good. You should feed 1 table spoon per glider along with a tablespoon of fruit and a tablespoon of veggies. I also feed a tablespoon of protein (mealworms, superworms, chicken or turkey) Remember DO NOT USE CHOCOLLATE FLAVORED ENSURE! CHOCOLATE IS TOXIC TO GLIDERS!!!!! For variety I blend the ensure with fruit and feed my baby a different flavor every day. This diet can be froze and 1 can should last one glider *about* a month. Sometimes I will use 2 cans a month and I have never figured out why beause I always feed the same amount......... Here is a link to some more info on this diet. http://www.sugargliders.org/gliderinfo/diets/darcy.htm
Another diet is called Priscilla’s Diet or The Pet Glider Diet. This diet is a little more complicated and I have never used it so I will only provide the link. I can say, however, that I know many people that use it with great success and they love it! Well, should I say there gliders love it! lol Here is the link. http://www.sugargliders.org/gliderinfo/diets/priscillaprice.htm
hi
I m getting a 3 yr. old male sugarglider. he is adorable. I am going to get him this huge cage and lots of new toys and change to the best diet around.
I am looking to find him a cage mate. can you give me any help and advice? I really can take great care and I know the first step is to find him a friend and get him on a great diet.
Im in nj. I can go to ny and Pa and Ct to meet anyone who has a male for adoption.
thanks for any advice !
Emylee
Is he going to be neutered? Your best bet is getting him neutered and either getting him an OLDER female (how old is he? Do you know?) for a friend, or another neutered male. If he is in tact, don't put another male with him until both are neutered.
For the cage, I can help you out there. I have a 260 gal. reptarium, and I LOVE it! It's huge and my glider has so much room to play, and do what gliders do best! Glide!!! You can order one off ebay for around 90 bucks. That's a great deal for how big they are. That's the cheapest and biggest cage that you're going to be able to find. Here's a link to one. This is where I ordered mine, and they help out with rescue efforts and are the cheapest I've seen.
http://www.reptariumstore.com/products.asp?cat=15
I would get the soft tray with it. It will come to be around 100 bucks with shipping and the soft tray and everything. That's a GREAT deal. Look how big it is. :D In my most honest opinion this is the best cage available. Can you tell I love it? ;)
For the diet, I recommend BML. It's a wonderful diet. You can get the vitamins for it at your local petsmart, and if you can't find them there then you can order them online. They last a long time. NEVER ever substitute the vitamins though. Stick with the ones each specific diet recommends. Here is a link to the BML diet.
http://www.sugargliderinfo.com/NutritionAndDiets/leadbeat.html
And if you can't find all the ingredients for that, let me know. There are a few other diets that are acceptable. In my opinion BML is the best diet out there. :cool:
If you need help with anything else let me know. I hope this helps, and it looks like you're going to have one lucky glider. Best diet, best cage, and a friend. Now all you need to add is the love, and the time you spend with them. Remember that gliders need to have a minimum of 2 hours out of cage playtime a night to interact with you, and they need to be carried around an additional few hours a day to bond with you.
Good luck!
I went to some Reptarium websites. It looks pretty nice. But I was wondering how you clean it. Does the soft tray slide out of the bottom, or do you have to reach down to the bottom and fish it out? Can you put a liner on the soft tray? Also, where do you put the gliders' food? Does it sit in the bottom in the litter or can you attach it to the side up higher? Do you even use litter with this? And how do you connect their pouches/nests since they like them up high? Can they chew through the mesh? I tried to look for more details on the sites, but didn't find any. Sorry for all of the questions! Maybe a store nearby will have one that I can look at to get a better understanding.
Thanks,
-B
Here is another post I made at another forum. But first, you do not need litter, just wipe out the bottom of the cage daily. And they cannot chew through the mesh (my glider loves to chew and he hasn't managed this) It's VERY easy to clean. You just take it apart and put it in the bathtub with hot water a few capfuls of bleach and some laundry detergent. I have dishes in my gliders cage, and I put a shelf in my rep and set them on that. Okay, so here's that post and feel free to ask any other questions. And if I left anything out let me know.
I have to break this post up because I have too many images and it wont let me post.
Ok, so I took the pics while I was putting my cage together. I’ll post the links in order.
Here is the black poles, that make up the frame of the cage. It’s super easy to put them together.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v213/EmyleeShadow04/cage/cage001.jpg
I like to sort them and put the taller ones in one pile, and the shorter ones in another.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v213/EmyleeShadow04/cage/cage002.jpg
It took me about 30 minutes to put the frame back together (but I’m still getting used to it. I’ll be much faster in a few months.)
Now I put the soft tray on. It’s a clear plastic tray for the bottom of the cage. It’s flexible.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v213/EmyleeShadow04/cage/cage007.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v213/EmyleeShadow04/cage/cage008.jpg
Now that that’s all out of the way, it’s time to get out the mesh cover!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v213/EmyleeShadow04/cage/cage009.jpg
And then pull it over the frame. I like to lay the frame down to do this since I’m so short.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v213/EmyleeShadow04/cage/cage010.jpg
Now it’s time to pull the frame upright to straighten it all out.
And, once that’s all done it’s time to get out the toys!!! (some people like to put the toys in the cage before they put the cover over the cage. I don’t like to do that though, because I use a lot of zip ties and the first time I put the cage together the mesh cover got slightly snagged on a zip tie. Not a lot of damage was done, but I still do it this way to prevent accidents. )
THANK YOU for the pictures!!! Very informative! I already have a pretty nice cage that has more than enough space for 2 gliders, but this one caught my eye. I'll have to look into possibly getting one. You can never have a cage that is too nice or too big for your babies! ;)
Thanks again,
I'm glad I could be of help.
