Rectal Prolapse Questions

What exactly causes rectal prolapse? I've heard a reason is genetics but don't know how true that is. Also, is rectal prolapse contagious? How should it be treated? Thanks everyone.

It is not contagious, but it is VERY serious and definitely needs a good small animal vet. Sometimes they can correct the problem; sadly, other times, the animal will remain in such pain it needs to be euthanized. Thankfully, I have never had this happen to my pets. Thankfully!

I do not know if diet or disease can exacerbate the condition, or if proper diet can make it les likely to happen, but a good diet, with reguler (but not too many) veggies can't hurt. Maybe someone else knows for sure.
