I have NO CLUE where to start besides have to have a building for it, and I have ideas of pets I want to sell...Anyone want to help me on how to begin a pet store? I about 10 years I would love to start a pet store. I would like to know what kind of building I would need and any other info. you may have available. Pets I would like to sell in it are:
a whole chinchilla section with a variety of colors, at breeder prices, not pet store prices.
hamsters of various breeds
mice (for pets, not feeders)
rats
degus
gerbils
bearded dragons
chameleons
fish
finches
parakeets
cockateils
bunnies (love the holland lops lol)
Others: _______ you name
There WILL NOT be puppies or dogs sold at my pet store...I think it is so wrong.
This will not be like an average pet store...it won't be if you have the money you get the pet...
Also all animals for sale will be born here, not bought from other people. i will have my own pairs that breed. Seeing I love pets it will not be a problem...
What are your ideas on this?
Also I will have many different supplies and cages. I already know where I'm going to buy my cages probably if they are still in business at the time, but I'm not sure...Where would I go about buying a LARGE quantity of stuff for my pet store? So it would be cheap prices and everything?
And also get what kind of building and everything?
I already want it to be made and not need a lot of work, and then have me be able to have a very big space for my animals and supplies.
All comments very much welcome!
Thanks! :)

Also:
Ferrets
Guinea Pigs
Turtles
Tortoises..

Also each person that works at the pet store will have kowledge on each animals, and there will be a care packet on each animal near the area the animal is in. ;)

i think that is a great idea and i might accidently copy you! i think more pet shops should be like that but i doubt you will be able to sell turtles since most of them are endangered.

It seems that all everyone talks about when opening a new pet store is what kind of animals to sell or not sell. The animals are the big ticket items, sure. but the success of any store is the repeat business. You need product. Any major chain is known, not for the pets they sell, but for the concessions they make for the pets. You need a variety of products for all types of pets. Food, literature, environmental items (like dog houses, bird perches, aquariums, terrariums, and the things to fill them) toys, collars and leashes, and if you have innovative ideas for your own signature items, then these are the things you must stock.
Now I supply pet collars, leashes, and a wide variety of webbing products to pet (and other) stores. I see many people selling the plain Jane and major brand collars and leashes. This is great for the major stores that have major advertising budgets. But the small store needs products that remind the customer where they got their stuff in the first place.
I suggest to any store that they do their homework and find quality products, offer the best advice, offer quality customer service. It also helps if the everyday products that people use have your store name on it.
I know the first thing that comes to mind is cost. I can't promise that every supplier out there is going to be inexpensive. I will happily offer my company to the service of anyone starting a new pet store. Check out Strapworks.com (http://www.strapworks.com) we have the ability to offer pet collars, leashes, leads, and in-line dog runs; customized in whatever colors you want whatever size you want, with three options on how to put your name, logo, or information on your product. We even do custom sewing, so if you have your own idea for a harness, or something entirely new we can do it for you.
I hope that anyone starting a new store will find something that they can use in what I have to say. I really hope for success in these endeavors.

I agree with Strapking.

I know this thread is very very very old, though.

The only problem I find in your petstore is that you want to breed all of these yourself...that is A LOT of animals to be breeding, raising, caring for, and selling.

Just my opinion.

I noticed that around here (where I live) the pet stores that have the actual pets in it to sell do so much better in business rather than the stores that just have supplies. Petco...Petsmart... I dont think that any of the pet stores around here can compare to them. I dont know if that is true everywhere else where you guys live but it's kinda sad.

OK first of all breeding animals is not easy it takes a lot of time and I mean A LOT! also if you plan on breeding all those animals yourself then you better have a BIG place in the back of the store to keep them all or a BIG house. Second Chemelons are very fragile animals if they dont get the proper humidity or UVB or UVA lighting they can die as quick as you can snap your fingers. Also they are solitary animals and don't like "roomates" at all. so you better have a lot of cages ( depending on how many and how many different spieces your going to have ) caring and breeding for those animals by its self is a lot of hard work and time. I dont mean to discourage you Im just being realistic. If thats really what you want to do research about all the animals first and I mean do a lot of research. There are tons of animals that I wanted as pets but then upon further research I found that they were just not for me. Also think about maybe getting a partner or two to help with that and divide the animals up and divide the work loads and whatnot. I hope this helps

I would try and locate an area where there is a lot of children, your local real estate agent can pull demographics on areas. Find a local Vet where you can get kick backs for clients you send there way. Attend Local Reptile shows etc to get to know the breeders, find your source of feeders, worms, crickets etc... Try and set up accounts with Big Name vendors zoo med etc...you are halfway there... Now you need cash and advertisement. You can have also a consignment business with certain breeders, this will save you $$$ because you get paid without the expense of owning... Good Luck !!!! Long Beach California
