Please help, my Syrian hamster who just gave birth 2 days ago has escaped this morning. Lastnight I took the cover off the aquarium to look at the six babies, but I forgot to put it back on before I go to bed. Now I woke up and the mother is escaped. I looked thoroughly around the apartment, but still no luck in finding. The door and windows are shut so there is no way she could get outside. She is inside somewhere. I use food in the bucket trick, hopefully it will work.
I also have another female Syrian hamster who have been pregnant for 8 days. Do you think I could swap her in to nurse the baby? just in case I still couldn't find the mother. Would she be able to provide milk for the baby? I have to leave home in 2 hours to go to work and will come home late at night.
So what should I do? Should I leave the babies alone and wait until I find the monther? or should I just swap that pregnant female in to look after in the mean time?
Urgent reply is needed. Please help. Thank you so much!!

Please help, I'm worry about the 2 days old babies. There are six of them. Is there any ways to nurse them manually until I find the mother? Thanks.

Did you try leaving a bucket of food out for the mommy? With a lil ramp to climb in? If you do that try and do it before night because thats when she'll be most active. Are your babies in a nest box or some type of box? If so, you could leave their box on the floor, the mother might smell the babies and come back looking for them...you might find her in the box with them the next morning. This happend to me once, thankfully I have a great dog, Rosie, who I trained to find the hammies when ever one of them does get out. She found our mommy with in five miniutes of looking!

I am so sorry you have lost your hamster, but there is still hope! My hamster got out once and i searched my room and i tore it apart looking for him .The only advice i have is to look in all your drawers, and look in the most dark spots in your apartment. That is where i found my little buddy.

Days have gone by and I have yet to find my hammy. Yes, I do put stairs of books that lead to the bucket, but still no sign. I have been looking for her everywhere, but couldn't find her nor any noises she's making, my apartment is very quiet. Where could she be? She must be inside somewhere as all the openings are shut and sealed. It's been more than a day now, do you think what has she been doing? Sleeping all of this time? Or is she trapped somewhere? She would be starving and thirsty by now, I hope she survives. Would she definitely come to get the food in the bucket if she has nothing to eat?
Oh and about the baby, I tried putting another pregant female in the cage, but she ended up eating one of the babies. I had no other choices but to take the babies to the petstore and gave them in hope that they could take better care of them as I have no clues. Hopefully they will live through. I'll call the store and check if they're ok or not, but they don't guarantee though.
Thank you for everyone's help, I do greatly appreciate that.

Awwe, thats sad! :( makes me wanna cry, try in your closets, shoes..pantry..anywhere like that maybe she is closed in a room? Any doors that are permenantly shut? Any other animals that could have killed her? Any holes in the walls? heat registers? Leave food in every room and a bowl of water..see which one she could possibly in..check every 20 minutes to see if any food is gone. Use tin foil under the food so u can hear her if she comes out..maybe she has one of the babies with her? is nesting and keeping that baby safe, so when u see her dont grab her, watch were she goes.

yes I agree with tia. very sad.... I wonder if you could of asked them what they would do, buy the stuff the would use, and do it yourself? I don't know if they would live ethier way... Sorry but most likly not.... There is hope she may have a baby with her though...

I'm sorry you had to give your babies away, and that you havent found your momma hammy yet. Don't give up hope. I would try the bucket trap someone mentioned(im too lazy to scroll up, but its there). Also, they have humane cage traps you could try. Since you also no longer have the babies, put her cage on the floor. Leave alot of food and water close to it, or in any rooms you think she may be stuck in. Like her favorite food, if it is sunflower seeds, and make sure you count them before you put them out! That is how you can tell they have been in a room!
good luck!
And is the Luffy from your name as in Monkey D. Luffy?
