I posted the question about chins having bladder infections and in the process found out that my little guy actually has a very high blood sugar. And low white blood cells (meaning poss. cancer?) Thought maybe someone here might have experience with diabetic chins. His buddy will be heartbroken without him. Thanks

I recently lost my chinchilla to bladder stones on 7-28-01, at first i didnt know what was wrong with him as the symptoms were very sudden. I tried finding a vet that was knowledgeable in chinchillas and after going to 3 offices I finally went to one that had a bit of experience. I explained the symptoms which began with him not wanting to move at all, he wanted to be very still, he then began to squeak suddenly which lasted only a few seconds, this alarmed me greatly which caused me to run to the vet. She took an x-ray an saw he had 7 stones in different areas, one lodged in his urethra, she tried to push it back into the bladder and even suck it out, but to no avail, as he was under anesthesia, she advised me of the poor prognosis, the only other thing she could do was to open him up in hopes to pull the stone from within the bladder, since I had no other options i agreed. After an hour she saddly came out and advized me that the procedure had failed and the only other option was to euthanize him, since leaving him in that state would cause him severe pain and in the long run death. I am still trying to cope with the sudden loss of my beautiful pet. So if you see these symptoms, request an x-ray,, vets with chinchilla experience are hard to find, you would think in a growing society of people acquiring exotic pets, at least one vet in mine and your area would make an effort to get informed.
