My aunt and uncle have a "pet squirrel" named "Squirrel" lol. He is in their back yard and everyday they go outside and talk to him giving him nuts and peanut butter sandwiches...Now (after a few motnhs) he has tried getting inside and actually going on them...He trusts them that much...So you just need to be careful because there is always the possiblity of them having rabies...But I think the best way is to talk to them everyday as you give them food.

The apartments where I live have tons of squirrels running around. Just last week my husband was outside watching my daughter riding her bike and talking on his cell phone. One of the squirrels saw him, came running up to look at him so he started making clicking sounds to the squirrel. She came even closer. Husband backed up because he thought the squirrel was gonna jump on him and bite. It kept coming. My front door was open at the time....I hear "Babe babe get some nuts Hurry!" I run out with a can of nuts. There sits the squirrel as cute as can be.......she came right up and ate from our hands. My husband was in complete awe, as he had never feed a squirrel before. Whereas I had fed different ones as a child at the country club.

Now everyday I go to her tree where I know her nest is and make clicking sounds and down she comes to get her nuts. She can sure put away the nuts! Brazils seem to be her favorite.
In fact the crazy little squirrel got up in my son's hand two mornings ago while he was feeding her. Talk about cute!
We've named her Click.

My sister had a squirrel at her apartment that would come in her apartment and sit on our laps. I think the first step is just leaving out food and then letting them see you and get used to you.

I'm a rehabilitor and just want to throw in a few warnings about hand feeding wild squirrels. Remember NO SUDDEN movements. Never ever try to pet the squirrel. They are very likely to take these actions as a threat and bite you. A squirrel can bite your finger right off if it so wishes. Also remember that they have very sharp tree climbing nails and hurt like hell when they dig in to climb up your body. If one is sitting on your shoulder eating a nut DO NOT turn your head to look directly at him, they dont like to be watched when they eat and he will likely suddenly attack your face. If you want to feed them the safest way is to sit on the ground and offer the treat in your hand or lap. then sit very still while he eats.

Good deal. You'd be amazed at what some people do. A close friend of mine spent a month luring a squirrel at his window over to hand feed. He gave her the nut and then reached out to pet her head. she left with the nut and the tip of his finger. Alot of people just dont realize their wild animals and their suspicious by nature. If they get scared they attack. I always try to let people know that quiet and slow is the way to go.

We are now feeding 3 squirrels. They had been watching us feed click....and curiosity got the best of them, couldn't resist they just had to have what Click was getting :) But Click will chase off the littlest one, so it'll come around from the back and get a goodie.

lol squirrels dont like to share when it comes to their food. They are very very curious though. Right now I have 5 awaiting release in the spring. They were all hand raised from 3 weeks or less though and are all pretty friendly except for the youngest female, she doesnt trust anyone. If I try to touch her when she's by herself she attacks me but if she see's the others playing with me she will sneak up and play with me too. I try not to let them get too people friendly though because I dont want them jumping on unsuspecting strangers on the street.(freaks most people out and they may hurt them) It breaks my heart everytime I have to release a group though. I miss them so much. Most of the time they stay around my yard to nest though because the reacclamation pens are out there and they usually make their nest close enough to see the safety of those pens.
