can cages built out of those crate storage systems (like for guineas or ferrets) be used for gliders? im just wondering cause it seems like that would be a much cheaper alternitive.

It depends on how wide the spacing is. Sugar glider need to have a bar spacing of nothing greater then 1/2 inch by 1 inch or 1/2 inch by 1/2 inch. They can get out of a cage with 1 inch by 1 inch spacing.

I looked at the cube things and all the pics i can find Im not totally sure on the size of the spaces, maybe the out side could be covered with wire mesh over the cubes?

If you are looking to make a cheap cage you can just get a few pieces of THIS (http://www.lowes.com/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=51171-362-1395) and make a cage. I would make it at least 5 foot tall. The standered 3 foot tall is much to cramped for an active suggie in my opinion.

You can use zip ties to hold the pieces together.

Oh, you would need 5 pieces. That comes out to be about $75 and then you would need some zipties, so add another $20. And then a trey is another $5. That comes out to be around $100 for a cage that is almost exactly the same as the ones that get sold for 300.

If you are looking to get a wonderful cage that is cheap, easy to clean and is HUGE then get THIS CAGE (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=1285&item=4361241632&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW) this is the best deal that you will ever be able to find. I am going to get that when I save up the money. Its so cheap and the perfect size for a glider.

Sorry I lied you will need 7 pieces. So that would be 30 more bucks. I really encourage you to buy the reptaruim instead of trying to build one yourself.

How to make a sugar glider cage

Take 6 pieces of the shelving and cut them to be 5 foot tall.
Take 1 piece and cut 2 pieces that are each 32 inches long.
Take any remaining shelving and cut it into as many pieces as you want shelves in your cage.
Take 2 of the 5-foot pieces and attach them side-by-side very securely with zip ties. This will be the back of the cage.
Now take 1 of the other 5 foot pieces and attach it to the back with zip ties so that it is at a 90 degree angle with the back of the cage.
Attach any shelving that you want where you want it to be. You will want to attach it with zip ties to both the side and the back.
Now attach the other piece of 5 foot tall shelving making sure that you attach the shelving to this side as well.
Now take the 2 pieces that are 32 inches long and attach one to the top and on to the bottom with zip ties.
Now, the front of the cage is a little more tricky. You will want to attach each of the remaining 5 foot pieces only to the sides and ONLY ONE OF THEM to the top and bottom of the cage making the zip ties a little looser on the piece that you do not attach to the top and bottom because they will be used as the hinges. This will be the door, and you will be able to open up half of the front of the cage making it easier to clean.

And that’s pretty much it. I hope this helps.

it all made perfect sense except this part^ Im assuming those pieces are the celing and floor of the cage? they would be attached horizontally correct?

yup. You got it. You just want to make sure that you don't attach one of the pieces that is the front because you want it to be a door.

Thank you so much! I wont be getting any gliders for a long time (a year or two at best) but when I do I dont want to have to spend like 300 dollars on a cage so Ill probably try that idea

Your welcome. Would you like to see some pictures of a similar cage?

This isn't my cage but it is pretty much the same idea. It's made out of the same materials.

I don't like the idea of having a bunch of small doors because it makes the cage SOOO hard to clean. That's why I would make 1 really big door on hinges.

Thanks for the pic and yea i agree with you, looking at that cage i dont really see anyway to get at some parts of the cage to clean it. I'll definatly be using your idea instead of something like that.
