View Full Version : Creating a virtual overpopulation situation (actually a question)…

If left unchecked, which pet would have the most offspring in a year?
From one mating pair at the beginning of the year to their descendents at the end of the year, how many of that one species would there be?
I’m talking about one male and one female; the average number of babies per litter; the number of possible litters in a year; including multiple generations from earlier offspring; and only including possible survivors of each litter produced.
In this virtual situation, food, water, shelter, love and care will be provided, regardless of the final number of pets.
I’m just curious about this, if anyone knows. It would be both interesting and scary to find out how much worse the pet overpopulation could be.

Christine, that is sooo bizarre!
I really don't know but just wanted to let you know that I did read it and really wouldn't know and think it's a very good, if not completely random question!
Take care,
Lottie and Smudge

Rabbits breed alot. If you had a male and female rabbit that could breed and they were left to breed whenever they felt like it, you would have more than a house fulll by the end of the year. The jestation period i believe is one month and they can conceive again the same day they give birth. I have heard of one persons bunny who had 8 kits in one litter. so you do the math. anywhere from 4 to 8 kits a month. ahhhh! ,lol!!

I'd say fish... they can spawn an awful lot of little ones.
But, non-water creatures, I'm not sure about.

I think Giant African Land Snails- species: achatina fulica. Just one pair of snails can lay around 300+ eggs in one litter although I'm not sure how many times they can lay in a year. In fact, I'm not sure if GALS are even valid for an answer bcuz they're both male and female!

4 to 8 kits a month from the original bunny, yes. But the father sees no problem breeding with his offspring, and the brothers, who will become the fathers, won't see the problem either.
GALS... any particular reason you are suddenly bumping all of these threads? :D

 I would have to say that mice and rats would make a bunch. Their gestation period is from 19 to 21 days, and they go into heat often. They have many babies in a litter as well. So looking around between 72 to 96 mice in your house, just from 1 year.

From one year from one mother. Don't forget, mice don't care about inbreeding.

ok, so let's look at facts here (I had to do this question for one of my lab animal tests!! lol) MIce and or rats have a gestation period of about 21 days. and they average between12-27 pups...lets go with 18 cuz that was the average this semester...ok, so in 21 days she will have 18 babies. (no are lost, just cuz we're that good)
ok, so say half are male and half are female.
since she has a post partum heat, she gets bred by the male a couple days after...365/21=17.6
17.6 litters in 365 days is 316.8 babies from that one mother.
now the female babies (9 of them) can start breeding by 42-56 days old. 365-56 = 309 days left in the year to have babies... 309/21= 14.7 litters from the babies. 264 babies from the original offspring...so now you have a total of 580 babies from just the first offspring
But we can't forget, buy the time that the first offspring is ready to be bred, there are 2 more litters from the first mom, so taht is 36 more babies. and this is just in 84 days.
My brain is hurting right now..so lets just leave it at ALOT.. 664 babies in 84 days

I added in two litters again...the two litters the mom had when the first litter were getting ready to be breeding age were already accounted for. so let's just say 600 from one mom and one of her litters on one year...but she can have 17 almost 18 in one year....
just ignore the 84 days
oopsie

Anyway, back to the topic; I'm not sure what you mean, AllAnimalLover but 2 a. fulica snails can have 300+ babies which I doubt a rabbit could have. Could she?

Well I was talking about mice and rats, not rabbits....and I would say, yes at a rate of 300+ in one litter that's alot. I was just goofing around with math. But anyways. I would estimate mice to have about 1000+ babies in one year from all the 18 litters the mom would produce in one year.
