It looks awesome to me, but I dont have any hammies. What, in your experience, is it like?

Thanks!

It is very cool, however, you will need to clean it very well at least once a week.(Which can be a pain!) I have a tupperware bin, not sure exactly how many gallons, but u can buy toys to put in it for the hammys and it is much easier to clean and a lot less expensive! my hammys love theirs!

I have no problem cleaning often. I clean my guinea pigs once a week, and their cage is about 9 square feet.

My advice: don't get it. I had it, and seriously regret spending money on it. There's no room...it has height, but ground space is what matters most. There's no room to fit any toys in it. You are much much better off buying an aquarium or a bin. You can get huge ones very very cheap. :)

I have a ten-gallon aquarium... should I try for something bigger?

I would not buy ANYTHING from Crittertrail
they have no concept of what a hamster needs in terms of enclosure
the Crittertrail One is useless for anything bar a stuffed toy
the petting zone lids are lethally designed
the Revolution has no burrow opportunity and don't get me started on its potential for leg injuries

I found a big tub for less that 15 bucks (11) I am gonna use that.

you might find this handy if you are thinking of using a storage bin as an enclosure

we have crittertrail cages and have had no prob pertaining to my hammies, but I have noticed that every week when I take it apart and put it back together that it seems to be cheaply made and prob won't last as long as the hamsters-I've already had to repair a coupla things-ASAP I am gonna switch to bins for Ralph and Hoop-I just love the thought of them having more room!

CT3 is great for hammies who love to climb, other cages with space and tubes on it are good too!

Hoop has a CT3-I think-if that's the neon purple and green spaceage looking one-Hoop does love the "slide" that leads up to his wheel.

I've got a habitrail mini for my dwarf hammies. I liked it better than the critter trail cause tubes come apart and are pretty easy to clean. And the plastic seems to be pretty high quality too. Same concept with the ability to "add on" extensions... I've gotta see if I can post a pic of it....

I also have a Critter Trail X, I tried moving my Sunny to a bin, and she was miserable. I moved her back to the Crittertrail, and she is active and running in her wheel again. I think cages go alot on personal prefrence. A crittertrail or any cage is fine as long as the hamsters can breath, and you take them out and play with them so they get their exercise.

I went thru many CTS and didnt like em. I had the revolution, awful. Then we had CT2 or 3 i dont remember i just know it was a pain in the butt to take apart and clean. I ended up buying a HT space station for my dwarfs, eventually buying another one to extend tubes too. They loved it! Currently though i have my syrian in the CT outlook and its connected to the HT space station. My guys a chewer so i wasnt sure about doing a bin for him.

it just wasn't escape proof for me. and frankly the night i came home from my uni prom and found the lid off was the last day i used one. i dont ever want to be hunting for an escapee ham at 5am while drunk ever again.

I have a ct3, ct2, ctX, ctz, ct-revolution,and ct-glitter.
The only time I ever had and escapees was user error... I put the thing together wrong (my bad)
The only time I had anything break was when Gradey (my 125 pound rottie) decided to help me clean the cages.
bin cages are good as long as you put enough air holes in. I would never use an Auqarium as the do not have proper ventillation.
Also CT cages are designed to be linked together to immitate the hamsters natural habitat of tunnels and burrows.

Oh if you do get a CT cage I suggest buying a brush designed to clean baby bottles. They make cleaning the tubes a breeze

Well, I have Crittertrail, Habitrail, and S.A.M. cages, and I really haven't had to big of a problem with any of them. Currently, I have 13 cages (of all three of the above types) all hooked together in one giant cag,e and it really doesn't take me any longer to clean then when I had 7 of them together, and only about 10 minutes longer then when I only had 1 or 2 of them. Why? My animals like only using one cages as a bathroom, and I can simply scoop up old shavings out of the others ans replace them. I only eveyr had one hamster that made a mess in the tunnels, and it made a mess everywhere it went, and stunk badly. Thankfully it was only the school hamster my little sister was caring for over break, and it left.

I have used these cages for gerbils, hamster (Dwarf and Syrian), and mice. I have had escapes, the hamsters escaped after human error. The mice I got were babies, and could actually fit through the gaps between the S.A.M tunnel and S.A.M cage (When not filled in by parts S.A.M sells) so I don't use them for my breeding mice anymore. My gerbils have escaped 5 times in the past couple months, but not because of bad cage design. Once was human error, the other 4 times (same gerbils, recaptured) my hunting dog lifted the tunnels off. (SAM tunnels must be lifted off, the other can be simply pushed off). The hamster I had loved these, and oddly enough, I actually housed a hamster better in these then in a tank, because it never burrowed. I put it in a tank full of shaving for a month, and it never dug any deeper down then to make a little nest for itself. Yet it loved to climb bars. Also, I rarely had a problem with chewing, which is easily sloved with sour apple spray on whatever is being chewed. Really, these cages are great, unless you have a tendancy to break things or if you want to breed.

I actually used to breed Campbells Dwarfs and they never escaped either.

Bin cages are convient and cheap don't get me wrong. (I am not very handy and would not trust my own work to make one of theses).
I just worry especially in the summer when I hear about people with aquarium tanks for hamsters. The lack of ventilation and air exchange can lead to some horrible things. The tank can become like an oven and the humidity gets far to high.
Reminder yes many breeds of hamster live in the desert but they are nocturnal they stay far under ground where it is cool durring the high temperature parts of the day and nights in the desert are cool.
Heat and humidity can be FATATL!

...This is an old thread... you are talking to "no one" Im sure they left PetsHub long ago! :D
