Hello all. My 9 year old son was sitting downstairs on the couch w/one of our siberian dwarf hampsters. Well, he comes up stairs and says he looked down and she was gone. Any good tips on where hampters like to hide or what might bring her out, if anything? She's a little shy and has never bit, so I'm afraid of scaring her. Anyway, comments are appreciated.

Hmmm...you said your son was sitting on the couch? I lost a hammy in my couch once. He burrowed between the cushions and all the way into the interior of the couch. I had to partially remove the lining on the bottom of the couch and lure him out with a nut. Good luck trying to find your hammy but if you haven't looked there yet, try to see if he's inside the couch...he may not be able to get back out if you've got one of those couches like me...the ones that aren't open all the way through... and he'll need food and water soon!

I have a feeling good ol' "Deb" might just be S.O.L., and we all know what that means. She was such a nice hampster as well. Oh well, guess I'm gonna have to go shell out another 10 bucks at the pet store.

Don't be so quick to give up. Its kinda mean to just say "oh well, guess I gotta shell out money for a replacement" Set out food and a bowl of water maybe in each room. Put tinfoil under it so you can hear when she goes to eat.

Grrrr. When I clicked on it last night it worked; now, it does not! (?)
Go to the top of the page and click on Search; then enter the appropriate information, and be sure to select the Hamster (or Gerbil) forum. You will find many threads.
What I need to do is summarize what to do in escapes, SAVE IT to a file of mine, and then COPY and PASTE it in when someone asks. I will type it out later this week, as time permits.
Good luck.

SOL is not very nice. It means S*** out of luck. And I personally think thats a terrible thing to say. It's not your hamsters fault and she shouldn't have to be "SOL" OR pay for anyones mistakes. Hamsters are very curious by nature. If you can't take responsibility and not complain about it you might want to seriously reconsider "shelling" out more money for a pet that might be better off elsewhere....poor thing.

No, I really do think she's S.O.L. now, it's been 6 days, I think she's done for. I'm going to have to go to the petstore to get Napoleon a new mate. (or 2) ;)

I once had a Syrian vanish for ten days somewhere in my apartment. I always left food, water, and veggies around.
One night I heard some noise in one of the overturned emptied flowerpots (that I filled with a little food). I sneaked over, saw his behind, and quickly righted the pot catching him inside!! He looked in perfect health. That was Dion.

It really dosn't seem like you care very much. You seem quite eager to run out and get another hamster (or two). If I lost a hamster I wouldn't be shrugging and saying she was "sh*t outta luck" and replace her so soon. Have you even tried to find her? Or just half-hoped she'd turn up? Set out food and water so she'd have a chance at surviving? I'm guessing not. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I very much doubt it too. I agree, seriously consider whether you can keep another hamster safe and care for it. Otherwise don't bother getting another one, just in case that one ends up "SOL" too.

I agree with you guys completely. One time my hammie got out and we have a hunting dog, so i was so scared i was almost crying. We put a little bowl of food outnd at within the next few days she made a bed in my bathroom grabage!!! She had found some tissues and had used them to make a bed! Also try leaving out some kind of bedding material. At least do something to help your hamster!

You guys your right. Both of my hamsters have gotten out and i have cried over it. Because what if something happened to one of them. When i was sitting for my neighbors hamster he got out and ender up in my moms water bed. But we just laughed it off. He wasn't sol. Reconsider before you get another hammy!!! Take responsibility!

I'm not trying to say that eburna doesn't care or is a bad person, I just felt bad for the little guy. We all mean well, but since this isn't really being constructive we should probably drop it before it gets out of hand. :) Eburna let us know if you need more help with ideas or if you find the little one!

...w/one of our siberian dwarf hampsters...Maybe I just don't know that much about HAMSTERS but I could have sworn they were either Dwarf or Syberian, being both isn't an option as they are two totally different types of hamsters.

I'll bet she never even clicked on one of those rescue threads above.I doubt very much that HE did as well. I am guessing that he is just disapointed that his hamster-mill plan has to slow down because his son lost the female. I am guessing he is kind of aious to get a new HAMSTER because from what he posted on here before he was breeding them and going to feed them to his neighbor's snake.

ok guys-I agree with flowerpage-being ugly isn't going to change a thing and if we are ugly people won't come here for help.

Personally I couldn't care a thing about someone who first wants to breed his hamsters to feed the babies to his neighbours snake. Then posts about how his hamster escaped and instead of trying to find her just says she's "sh*t outta luck" and only thinks of shelling out more money at the pet store. What impression would we make on people who come here for help if we don't seem to care about the hamsters themselves, but only care about not trying to offend someone who's clearly trying to stir up sh*t or is just plain ignorant?

No kidding, he comes here, starts a thread aboaut how is HAMSTER got away, because his kid is careless. He doesn't bother trying to catch her, simply states that since she hasn't come back (which I wouldn't either if I was just going to be bred to death, so that some cruel b*st*rd could feed my kids to the neighbors snake) she is just sh*t out of luck and going to die and how oh dear, now he has to spend more money to replace her so he can abuse her replacement too. Quite frankly I don't care if I offend him. If he isn't going to take advice he should quit posting about his problems when he doesn't care one way or the other unless it costs him money or interupts his HAMSTER-milling to feed his neighbors snake, which he shouldn't have posted about on this thread in the first place.

I understand all that. but like I said being ugly won't change him...ya'll say you don't care about someone like thta, but you do care about his hammies-the only way to possibly change the way a person thinks is to keep them around and maybe they will come around-the only way to keep them around is kindness. you all may be the only person he talks to about his hamsters. I don't know-maybe I am too much of an idealist, but I believe we can change the world with kindness-one person at a time...

Glad to see the people here are so loving, lol. NOT! Anyway, for those of you who are less rude....2 weeks to the day my girl was in the kitchen and saw the hampster scurry from under the fridge to the closet. I wasn't there, but she yelled for the kids, and they took Deb back and put her with Napoleon. They fought a little at first so she separated, but then had to go to work so put them back together. Now they're fine. She acted pretty thirsty/hungry(or so I'm told anyway), but she seems fine. She must have survived off the condensation off the fridge or something. Oh, by the way, maybe this will make some of you happy. Got 2 red tailed boa's today. And did not even think of feeding them the hampsters, went to the pet store to get feeder mice for each as well as a small rat. The hampsters are safe in their aquarium, and even moved them out of the room with the snakes. It's good to have them reunited.

My son has a hamster, Furball, that LOVES to escape. His middle name is Houdini now. He would find the darndest ways of escaping his cage. He always loved to go under the radiator to sleep, or hide under the bureau or our dryer. One time I found him in the shower stall! Furball was lucky I had looked down before turning on the water...he would have been one soaked hammy!(lol) Our other hamster, Smokey, had also escaped a couple of times. She loved to go into my daughter's dollhouse! One time she escaped for several days. I was a wreck! We finally got her when she came out to drink. We set her cage up and rigged the latch to close when she entered. Sure enough, she came sniffing and went into her cage for some food and water and although our rigged door didn't close the way it should have, I was gratefully nearby and heard her in her cage and closed it right before she escaped again. Boy did she drink! I think she was actually relieved when she was back "home." She slept for two days straight...it must have been some party!! She was behind the cabinets in our kitchen. She was lost by my daughter upstairs and we found her downstairs. Your hammy can be on any level of you home. Put food around in mini piles on each level, so you can be sure he or she can eat a little to stay alive. Hamsters are so very resilient!! They can find food sources where you think there is none! Don't give up on your hammy!! And I do have to say that "SOL" is really not a great term to use on your precious hamster, whether it has passed or not.
