i always though hamsters had one place they iked to sleep and that was it.

beans has slept everywhere but in his hut meant for sleeping.

he has a "sam" no mess food compartment that he sleeo in ocasionally, he sometiems will make a pile in the corner and sleep on that, other times he sleeps in a toob, ad still other times he will sleep on one of his various jungle-gym type accessories.

is this normal behavior? is my hamster just an explorer, or does this mean somehting is bothering him?

mine have different places they like to sleep-sometimes Ralph lays out like a dog right out in the open-it is so funny...anyway sometimes they will sleep in the same place for the week, but after a cleaning it always changes...I'm sure it is fine for them to have whatever sleep habits they want as long as all behavior is normal and they are getting enough sleep...mine seem to do whatever they want-for instance last night after Ralph got his home cleaned out and it was all fresh with brand new food and treats he went over and poo'ed on his food! he has never done that before. Hoop poo's anywhere he feels like it-I wonder if they are subject to "moods" and whatnot...I am sure your lil babe is fine. BTW-Ralph is the black bear and he is the one who sleeps in different places a lot.

Hamsters do often pick one place to sleep and usually stay there, but not always. Sometimes they just like to try somewhere new I guess. After cleaning the cage and removing most of the smells that your hamster has left behind is the most likely time that your hamster will change where it sleeps. I've never had my hamster sleep out in the open though, I'm sure it's cute :D .

Mabye it's just something fun for them to do. Make a new nest every few days.

Sometimes Snowbell sleeps in her house and sometimes she sleeps in a nest she made in a corner, every now and then she will curl up in a random corner with nothing but the corn cob bedding.

2 of my hamsters sleep in different places, the rest always sleep in the same place. I read somewhere that when hamsters sleep out in the open, that they are content, and feel safe in their home. Is that Beans in the av? Your av is very cute!

Mine usually only sleep in their little houses during the day. They take nighttime naps right in the open. Zero sometimes sleeps on a wooden log toy, and Smudge stretches out on her belly. Its quite cute.

The dwarves never sleep in their little house, instead they burrow into the shavings under it. And the babies sleep wherever and however, as Tikki's demonstrating in my avatar. :p

Chaos-that is a cute pic! our Ralph(black bear) sounds like your Smudge and I know you said they look alike...I think Ralph thinks he's a dog hehe...does Smudge do any other things that seem like dog behavior? I know black bear is just a descriptive name for a syrian, but do you think different "types" have different behaviors? I know all hammie's are different, but ya'll's black bears and mine do things that I don't hear anyone else describing...hmmmm...

Hmm, I can't really think of anything else dog like that she does. She's a very "soft" feminine hamster. She's just really sweet and likes to cuddle. But Zero my "panda" (black banded) is quite dog like. I taught him to (usually) come when I call his name, since he runs up when he sees my hand I would say his name and give him a seed or treat every time he came. People are usually pretty impressed when I show them, I think hamsters are smarter than people give them credit for. He also gives me kisses like a dog. And everytime someone walks by his cage he HAS to run up to see them. I swear if his tail was longer than a stub it would be wagging. Even my mom who dislikes all rodents has to say hi to him, because he's just so friendly. I had another friend comment on just how dog-like he was. One of his nicknames is Puppy too. :p
