Mud fever is a bacteria in the mud that attacks the horses legs, scabbing and irritating them. It can work its way up to the horses belly and barrel depending on how bad it is. It can sometimes be fatal.

No, but I've been horseback riding for 4 years and the horse I ride (Little Jack) has mud fever. He's an appaloosa. I also ride Buck, who's also an appy. I've fallen off 4 times, been stepped of twice, kicked once and bit countless times. All in 4 years. Lets just say even the nicest horses can be violent.

I've been around horses since I was 7, and had one of my own for 12 years. I've only been kicked once and never been bitten, I think I've just been lucky! That said, I've got no idea how many times I've fallen off (millions!)

By the way, my friend's horse is quite prone to mud fever, when it's muddy she hoses his legs everyday, dries them carefully and puts cream from the vet on the sore parts. I think you can get some sort of barrier cream to prevent it but I'm not sure.
