Hi all,

I am a total novice at budgerigars, & hope someone will help me out here. I've been told that to tame a budgie, one must start handfeeding it whilst it is abt 2 wks old, right till it is 4-5 wks old. Then, daily human association is necessary to keep it tame.

However, if the budgie has never been tamed b4 (it's housed in an aviary with other birds), is it still possible for one to hand tame it? The budgie is abt 4-5 mths old & is a male. I'm thinking of adopting it from my friend, & intend to house it alone.

One more question : if budgies have to be hand tamed right from young, does this mean that the budgies sold in petshops r usually wild?

Thanks.

Though, taming ought to be done early, but there are always exceptions.

I am a bit confused after reading your post. Is the bird 4-5 weeks old or 4-5 months old?

Anyway, regardless of its age, with daily handling to the budgie, it will soon adapt to you. Though it has been housed in an avairy before, it would take some time to tame it, but alas, given time, it is still possible to tame it. Try to feed some fruits or nuts when it is on your hand too. Please remember to close all windows before you try to hand-tame train it.

Also, from my point of view, petshops' bird are not wild, but i think, seriously timid.

Hope this helps. If it isn't just drop a message. Good luck.

My budgie was not tamed until he was a year old. Most people suggest trying to get the bird to hop onto your finger and moving slowly. That didn't work for my bird, so I took a different approach. I just took him out of the cage, and held him onto my chest and rubbed his head until he was used to it. Within two weeks he would walk all over me. His wings are'nt clipped.

I think you have to go to the individual store and see how their birds are. The big chain stores have a tendency...it seems...to get their birds from big farms and not from the smallerbreeders that have time to work with the birds individually. Go into your local pet shop and ask the owner to let you handle the birds and pick out the one you fall in love with. If he or she will not let you interact with the bird, then I would shy away from it. Remember to always sanitize your hands before and after handling pet shop birds

hi, my name is emily. i saw your message on pets forums on taming birds, you seem to know a fair bit about birds so i hope you can give me some advice. i brought a budgie yesterday....and its very shy. i tried handling it....but it would bite me.
now, when i tried to get close to it..it would move away.

the pet store told me to tame it by holding its head on my chest untill it calmed down...
but it seems to frighten my bird when i try to do that.

another question, it nips its beak with out reason...is that normal?

hope you can help me with my new bird
thank you in advance.

You can finger tame your parakeet. Use a stick at first. Atach a spray millet to the stick. Your pet will walk over. Pick the stick up slowly and walk around the room, softly talking to it. Next time use your finger instead of a stick. http://petshub.com/ubb/wink.gif

You got your bird yesterday and are ttrying to tame already? It does have a reason to bite i'm afraid... it's scared... and i'm sorry but i think ur pet shop is naff... it's too soon... birdie should be left for a few days before you try to tame... imagine how you would feel if some big giant grabbed you out ur bed... shoved u in a box and bounced you around for ages...then shoved u in a strange house... then grabbed you and slammed you against their chest while you wriggled and bit....

See what i mean?

you could give bird a tiny bit of food in cage... then an hour or so later pout in some more, then some more, then some more... bird will associate you with food... always good.

if wings are clipped let them flutter about about a bit... then try picking up offf floor with stick... then try finger... dont forget to teach "up".

i dont think holding the budgie against ur chest will tame it it will make it more scared if u ask me! i had a budgie for nearly 5 years and he was never tame he wouldnt even come out of his cage and i really did try and tame him but he just never got tame. he actually did start to not be so scared of me a few months before he died so if he was begining to get tame it took a long time or maybe it was just me :S
