hey i was wondering what would be more expensive, to keep your horse at a boarding stable or to maintain a pasture and barn on your own property and keep your horse there. also, what are some pros and cons of boarding vs. at home and what would be the best situation overall. thanks!

As a horse owner who has only boarded, but know many folks that do the at home thing, I'd say it depends. If you have horses on your property, you deal with early morning feedings, and evening feedings, watering, stall cleaning, etc. In addition, you need to have room for hay, feed, manure, etc., and you'll need to be able to clean the stalls once/day, unless you keep your horse in the pasture. I work FT, so boarding is the best for me. My boy gets turned out six days a week, fed, hayed, watered and I clean his stall on Sun. and turn him out. I pay $400/mo., and for me, it's worth it. If anything ever goes wrong with him, there's always someone there that would notice and call me and the vet, and that's great insurance. Plus, I have a lot of great folks at my barn for advice, friendship, etc. Hope this helps--do you have a horse, or are looking to get one? Laurie

Ive always liked the idea of having your horse at home better although there is more responsibility you can go and be with it whenever want instead of having to drive, but on the downside if you ever go anywhere overnight you have to find some1 to take care of your horse for you, if you board somebody would already be there to take care of your horse. :)
