I've had their 10 gallon tanks in the same spot for 2 years, but it's a really tight fit and hard to get them in. I accidentally made a hole in the wall a few months ago trying to squeeze the tank in. Today, somehow when I wasn't paying attention to them while the tank cover was off, they pushed it in.
A good long fall down to the bottom of the wall. Now they're scratching it. Looks like the only way to get them out is to make another hole. I can hear them running back and forth, jumping and scratching. Actually, I'm not even sure there are 2 in there. At least 1, the other might be running around the bedroom somewhere but I doubt it. She probably followed her sister.
Right now I"m waiting for someone to come help me, because I also have a lot ot move to get to them.
Damnit.

not sure if it sounds possible in your case though :(

yeah it was a regular wall that was hollow inside. They couldn't jump high enough to get back out the same hole so I had tomake a new one. They're fine now.
I was just so aggravated when it happened. I had to vent. It was such a pain in the ass to get them out. I already spent like 2hrs that day cleaning the room and washing 5 tanks..Then I had to deal with that. lol.
I covered the holes up. Now the idiots are trying to dig back in.

LMAO.
yeah - when they find a nice dark enclosed space... no matter how much of a hassle it was, the gerbies ALWAYS want back in...
For about a week or so after my girl have climbed up that tunnel in the wall, she tried to get back in every time we put her in the bedroom - thankfully we had covered it up :)
now they just try to hide under the bed.
but they have a short attention span and get bored and come out to investigate the people making funny noises :)

I am glad none of my gerbies have ever gotten the chance to get stuck in a wall or anything. That would be a major pain in the ass getting them out of there. I am glad that you got the out safe and sound though.

I think gerbils having short term memory is such a myth.
I kept them away from it for 2 days, let them out again tonight and the one who found the hole is still going nuts at it. I only covered it with tape and paper.. I'll probably have to use something else or she's going to claw right through it.
I guess they like falling on their head. Possible brain damage?Because seriously, it was about a 5 foot fall down to the bottom. lol.

If you don't get the top one properly secured, it would be a good idea to not secure the bottom one too tight I think.

Heh, Jiffy's got a point. Until you spackle up that top hole, it'll be easier to keep the bottom one easy to open just in case you have a repeat of that exciting little adventure. :P
I know the hassle of gerbils in dark spaces, and it sucks! But unfortunately, the chances are better than even that all gerbil owners will have to rescue a little beasty from one tight spot or another at some point.

I put Jerry(a gerbil I used to have) on my sisters dresser and he fell through the smallest hole onto the carpet. Luckily I got him before he ran to far!lol! I miss him. :(
I'm glad you got your gerbils out safe!

lol once I let 6 gerbils run around a room completely empty except for a dresser. I didn't care if they went behind it or underneath it. They even managed to squeeze in the bottom drawer, no big deal since I could just pull the drawer out. Or so I thought. They ended up finding another hole to go down to the bottombottom of the dresser. Even after pulling the drawer out, they were still in there.
After a few came out, I grabbed one ready to put them back in their tank.. That scared everyone else and they all ran back in and thumped for about 30 minutes.

I purposely made the bottom hole kind of high so they had to jump out of it get out of the wall. That way if they ever get loose on the floor, they couldn't run in it.
They're taped up pretty good now with paper covering it..even if they did scratch at it, they won't get anywhere.

That's good, the last thing you want is for them to be in the wall again.

There used to be an evil sofa in my flat. Very occasionally, a gerbil would find a hole in the back and crawl inside it and into one of the sofa arms.
The first time it happened we were stuck for an hour trying to pull it out again and I ended up scratching my arm to pieces on the old staples that were used to hold the chair together (thankfully the gerbil didn't go near any of the staples and wasn't cut on them).
The last time it happened I just couldn't be bothered to go through the hassle again so I ripped the sofa open from the bottom up, just taking out any obstructions between me and the gerbil. It was an old sofa anyway and it needed replacing so I wasn't too bothered about destroying it any more than it already was, but the crafty little gerbil managed to get himself into an even harder spot than the previous one so even with the whole thing ripped open, it took a good while to coerce the little guy out of the hole I'd managed to make. I'm sure he was having a great time playing hide and seek, but the sofa was so old that when I pulled it open about fifty years worth of dust and decomposing sofa foam flew in my face. I was choking on the stuff the whole time whilst the gerbil sat safely in arm :D
