What would make your friend think that your hammy is pregnant? If she is, she will begin to plump up somewhere in the last week of her pregnancy. It's hard to tell sometimes, especially if you have never dealt with it. My hammy's first litter was a total shock. I never even suspected that she could be pregnant. On the second litter, I had it pinpointed down to the day she delivered. She may also become aggressive if she is pregnant. My hammy was always so sweet....EXCEPT when she was pregnant. She was so nasty to me. And, of course, you will notice that they will begin to build a nest. The gestation period for a dwarf hamster is 18-21 days, so keep an eye on her.

SHe may preen around her nipples- her nipples may become enlarged. SHe is not going to show the pregnancy until the last few days. She will be interested in making a nest, may be irritable or jumpy, sleep more heavily. You ned o fee her NOW and throughout her nursing some high protien foods- chicken, turkey, tofu, cottage cheese, wheat germ- to cut down on the possibility of her culling the litter. When you see her making a nest (clean her cage now and give her lots of toilet paper, remove the wheel) put her in a dark, quiet room- don't go near her except to give her food and water until the babies are about 12-14 days old and have their eyes open. Then you can hold them, clean the cage, get the mom out for short periods of exercise, etc. they will need to be seperated by sex about 25 days old so they do not inbreed.
