View Full Version : Siberian Dwarf Hampsters and Rats?

I'm wondering, if I put 2 small rats in with my 2 Siberian Dwarf Hampsters, even just over night at the longest, would they fight? I don't want them to hurt each other, but I also at times get my feeder rats early and want a spot to house them for the night (kind of like a rat hotel I guess, lol) before their big day. Would they get along, or would they fight? Does anyone know for sure? I don't want to try and find out the hard way.

yet another stupid question from you...and its HAMSTERS, there's no P in there.

rats are known to KILL and eat small rodents, in nature they will eat mice, pigions or whatever else they find

No, I'm not trying to get people "ryled up", lol. Just have questions about my pets. Sorry.

Buy pre-killed rats. That way the only place you'll have to house them is in the freezer, like I said earlier its the only safe way to feed snakes.

If you house your dwarf hamsters with your rats, they won't fight.

Your rats will probably kill them and eat them, though.

There won't be much in the way of fighting. There will probably be a lot of squeaking, running and bloody gore splattered all over the place.

BTW - I have a Jack Russell that killed two of my pet cats. Do you think it's okay if I kept him in the same cage as my rabbits?

Thank you for the advice. I had (once when I bought the rats a day early) once put the rats in a large plastic see through empty peanut container. I put a few holes in the lid, and set the container in my hampster tank. I was trying to see what their reaction would be to each other (but since your posts here I will not attempt to let them out). Anyway, they pretty much just looked at each other, then ignored each other and went to sleep. Thanks for the comments though, despite popular belief, I'm not out to abuse my pets.

You are a sick individual!!!!!! You were just trying to see their reaction???? I bet you were hoping that they would try to kill each other through the jar or something. The more you post the more stupid you sound!!!!! You are a moron!!

Yeah, I'm a sick twisted individual, lol. People like you give advice forums a bad name. No, FYI I was trying to see if there was a possibility of them getting along, and they didn't act hostile towards each other, but I still didn't want to "risk" it w/out further looking into it further. I'm glad I didn't.

People have tried keeping mice and rats together in cages before.

They "got along" initially but eventually, the rats's predatory instincts kicked in and the mice ended up dead.

The same thing happens with people who have dog breeds with strong prey drives and smaller pets...initially, they get along...then the smaller animal does something which triggers the dog's hunting instincts and it's all over.

I have to disagree with you on this one. Certain breeds of dogs will do this, aka pit bulls and the like, but most dogs and cats can live together just fine.

i have a bunch of rodents...my rats ignore my mice and hamster...sometimes one of my rats will take a nap on top of mice cage during play time
the mice would come up and smell the rats (through the wires)..rats just ingored them
except one day, out of no where, whe one of the mice walked up the smell a rat that was walking by the cage...my rat just turned around and bit my mouse's ear(through the wires)...right through the ear....
now i have my mice in a bin so that will never happen.

the point is...having those animals even close together is an accident waiting to happen. having them on the same territory will be a disaster.

Glad u learned from your mistake. I had the rats securily in a hard plastic see through peanut jar, so there was no way anything could have happened unless they chewed through the plastic.

Well, based on what everyone here seems to say about rats being unstable and able to attack at anytime, why would you want that?

Why you want to put rats in jars????? I really hope you don't kill them that way that's not a good way to prekill any rat. I say feed to a sanke alive if you want to kill a rat by putting it into a jar......... But I did not get what you said so I don't know if your even talking about prekilling rats....... I do say you don't need to mix any animal with another animal unless there fish and they can live in the same tank....
