View Full Version : Hampster constantly trying to escape...? lol

I have my 2 siberian dwarf hampsters in a 10 gallon tank. The female of the 2 has tasted freedom 3 times, once Deb left my son's lap and was AWOL for 2 weeks, found under the fridge. She has since escapsed from the tank, I "believe" she did this by climbing the water bottle. Since then I have covered the area of the tank that the H20 bottle sits, and she didn't escape, that is, until my son changed her litter shavings and forgot to put the lid back over that side. She escaped again that night, so I'm almost sure that's what it was. Anyway, now she is constantly, every night, banging off the sides of the glass. It's really quite entertaining to watch. Anyone else have hampsters that constantly are trying to escape?

Well by reading some of your other threads, I would understand why she would try to escape. She is probably scared of becoming snake food. I can't believe that you think it is so entertaining to watch her bang herself off the sides of the glass. Someone really needs to have you committed. You know some place that you can bang yourself of the walls (without the padding).

And for the last time, it is H-A-M-S-T-E-R-S.

sounds like your hamster is really bored.

take her out to play more often, you're SUPPOSED TO.
how would you like to spend 24/7 in a bathroom size room?
or get them more toys. do SOMETHING

I try not to handle them as much now because I don't want their sent on me before I handle my boa's. The kids also seem to show that the novelty has worn off with them, because they don't handle nearly as much now either. I think basically I'll just let them live out their lives where they are. They live 1-3 years, right?

E burna, i DO feel kinda bad for you... but seriously, you can't deny you've gotten on the bad side of these people with some of your past comments, so it's no surprise that they'll jump on everything you say now, good or bad or whatever.

I don't think there was anything that bad about this post, and yeah, my hammies used to always try to escape too, i think it's just curiosity.

Though, you did say you have pretty much stopped handling them and your kids have lost interest. which is sad, why own hammies if you aren't that interested anymore?

Seriously, I think someone didn't get enough attention from their mother when they were a kid.

*Cough* *Cough*... Eburna.... *Cough* *Cough*

I need to know something, Were you breast fed?

Poor little hammies. Maybe, Just Maybe eburna, you will get the role of being a hamster in the next life, and just luck out to have a Dennis the Mennis kind of owner.

I wouldn't wish that on any other hamster, but if you did come back to the next life as a hamster, that would be alright with me.

Eburna, you're Certainly Special, with a captial "s". And you win the stratch and sniff sticker for the last place in the brightest crayon in the box contest.

We (Misty1964 & I) have a hamster that when ever he hear us. He goes nuts. It all started after he was on death door laying on he side and we started feeding baby carrot food and that saved his life. He bits the cage bars ( "playing the humonica") as Misty1964 says. As soon as we open the door of the cage he's out of there.

Lack of affection for animals you brought into your home and are responsible for aside...

She wants out of there because he is constantly trying to mate with her. If you don't like these two hamsters now, wait until you have a few litters of 6 or 8 back to back. And then by the time those hamters are 4 wks old they will get pregnant and so on and so on...

You need to seperate them, give them an adequate space and plenty of activity, food, water, etc. for them to be contented in their homes. I woud honestly try to rehome them, though, if I were you. Children have to be made to be responsible for things that they ask for- but if that is not possible tere are other poeple out there that can give them a good home.

Now, that said, I would like to point out- we love our hamsters as much as you love your snakes. I undertand there must be some sort of hardening for a person that must feed one animal to another, but you are not incapable of seeing that you are being very offensive. I felt bad for you at first that you got jumped on, but that statement- even in retaliation- is not the statement of someone who has any business owning pets.

Hey e burna. Its me the one that said they would buy those poor hamsters. I think your talk in crap because you wouldnt sell them. And if you do sell them you would go buy more of them. You are the worst person ever. I cant stand you. Do you think its alright not to play with those hamsters. My advice to all of the people in this forunm is to ignore him. When you see a post from e burna just ski right over it. There is no way to explain to him that not taking care of hammies is wrong.I am tired of his ridiculous posts and rude attitude. Yes they stary to mate at 1 month but usualy 3-6 mths. The thing is the male wants to mate at 4 wekks but females want to wait till older. bUt males will chase females even atck them if they don't want to mate. Please take them and put em in seperate caged petsmart has a type of cage looks like a bird cage this would be god for them comes with wheel buy 2 each is 30 dolars. And you'll be set or go to a petshop or fle market and buy 2 10 gal aquariums for 3-5 at flea markey and 10-15 at petsmart :rainbow1:

luckynkentucky

SO now that they may be breeding its exciting. That is a load of *stuff*. I think having some baby hammies would be exciting too but I am still excited about having a hamster. I have had my 2 hammies since feb. and each day they do something that amazes me. Just today my syrian fell asleep on my lap. It was so cute. But you are saying that the only reason your hammies are fun is because they are having cute little babies. Well guess what in a couple of months they will be the same as the 2 you already have and you will think they are novelties.

You are like the people who say "Aww... look at that cute little puppy" and then they take it home and it grows up and they abuse it and dont feed it properly because they arent as cute as when they was puppies. My advice to you e burna is to give your hamsters to your nieces or nephews because I am sure they will take more care of them than you can.

You say your 28 but you act and think like an 8 year old. and most 8 year olds are more intellegent and loving to there hammies than you.

Hi eburna, I am not flaming you but out of curiousity...have you ever been bitten good by a hamster...its no treat. Out of love for your snakes please don't feed the dwarfies to them, they could get seriously injured. If the Lowell you live in is Ma and you would like to rehome your hammies I will take them if you would like. I rescue unwanted rodents and either keep them here to live the rest of thier lives or find new homes for them. I have a website for them if you would like to see some of my critters I have taken in (I am a little crazy for critters of all sorts.)

He HAS said that he is going to feed them to his snakes... he even said it again, and Artagiel quoted that.

And e burna knows that it's spelt 'Hamster'... he's just doing it to wind people up, and from what I've read it seems to be working :p

Wow~! You guys are all jacked up!!! I don't find anything wrong with what E Burna has been saying! As for Artagiel, E Burna never said the hammies were going to be fed to the snakes!!!
Just my two cents..
Try reading a few of his other threads. He states that he wants to breed them to feed to his snakes. We wouldn't just all randomly start picking on someone for no reason.

You guys like to turn things around a lot here. And btw, in some places it IS spelled H-A-M-P-S-T-E-R. Frankly, I don't think it matters!
This person tried to ask an honest question and you guys totally turned it around.

Thanks for the support. The people on here have jumped on me like a pack of wolves. It seemed like they were sharks in a pool going for a kill. I'm glad some people here besides myself can think straight. Thanks again, I appreciate it.

Like everyone else has said, you need to read everything before making a post like that. He has made several threads in this forum about breeding with the sole intention of feeding the babies to his snakes.....quote..."As a treat and not a staple for them"...end quote.

BTW...please tell me where you spell hamster with a "p" in it. "hukd on fonics" sure didn't work for you. I would demand a refund.

Im sorry if you felt my comment was directed in that way. I was only trying to help and I wasn't judging you. I myself don't keep snakes as I couldn't choose one life over another but I don't condemn others for keeping them as pets and pets need to eat, dwarf hamsters though can give a nasty bite (we have one that thinks she is a piranah over here lol!) I was just concerned.

e burna,
animals will not mate if they are being stressed out. if you really want to breed your hamsters for whatever reason you need to improve their conditions, which includes interacting with them, providing a plethora of toys and making sure they are physically and mentally happy. when animals reproduce it is a sign of good husbandry practices. and how do you know the level of cognition your hamsters experience. there is no way to tell what anyone is experiencing. recent research has suggested that animals are just as cognitive as a five year old child. so treat your animals in the same way you would treat a child. thats just basic human decency anyway.

Well, mine must not be stressed, because I've got 3 babies that are growing fast.

Sorry, you're a very close-minded person. Might be a lie, but you're very rude. If you actually wrote down the ENTIRE quote, you would have seen that he wrote that IF he were, it would only be a treat, but he isn't going to feed the hamsters to the snake...
and BTW you can google "hampster" for yourself. I don't PERSONALLY spell hamster that way, but some cultures do. I saw that most people in the UK, Europe, New England spell it that way, so it isn't cool to make fun. And I never had to use HOOKED ON PHONICS (<---- really spelled that way), fortunately for my AP English teacher. I love reading as it is, and very fluent in English, thanks!
>^.^<

P.S. YOU GUYS ARE MEAN!!! Don't like you all that much (I can't say I hate you because you're probably not all that mean in person)!! Very, very closed-minded people that don't mean to be, but that's how it comes out! You can try to be nice, really! You also have to understand that typing online can not fully express your emotions, and maybe you just need to read posts more than just once or twice before being mean/rude/just plain a really misunderstanding person. I know you guys just care, but please don't flame right away please, especially if you don't know me/anyone else!
That's all..

I live in England, it's spelt 'hamster'. Just because the said spelt it like that doesn't mean that it's correct. Nobody was making fun, we're just fed up of having to tell him every time. And he thinks it's funny when people tell him, so he spells it 'hampster' to wind everyone up.

Now, if you read back, he DID say he wanted to feed them to his snakes. NOT in this thread. He HAS said that he will consider not doing it since then. We aren't closed minded, this person was just generally being rude in most of his posts to certain people. We tolerated it, and we're fed up. If you don't like it, skip this thread.

PLEASE read thoroughly the other posts that a person has made in future before commenting.

I'm just gonna reply to your question! :)

To stop your hammies trying to escape you need to make sure your hammie is happy with where it is;

. The hammies need space to be relaxed meaning they won't try and escape through the stress of living in a small place. ;)

. They need some basic hamster mix and some kind of fruit or veg e.g apple, cucumber :D

. Some attention and exercise ia also needed :p

. I found placing my hammy cage somewhere quieter made my hammie stop nibbling his cage bars quite so much :chat:

If your hammy has all these things I can't see why he trying to escape I hope i've helped

I hardly think a 10 gallon fish tank is too small for a pair of hampsters who are sexually active together to cohabitate.

You'd probably be more likely to get a response if you made your own thread... most people habe gotten bored with this one and won't read it.

Google some ideas for toys and playtime.
