taming lovebirds

I have a young lovebird under a year. He will stand on my hand but he flies away and is scared of me. How long does it take them to get them used to you and not be scared?

hi pg,
what i used to do was to cup the wee bird in my hands and place it close to my chest, talking and stroking it gently as i went about my business.
when you go to get him offer him a piece of his favourite fruit/sweet and he may hang around a wee bit longer and then as time passes he'll forget (ish!) the food and hop on to your hand quite happily.
