Hello everyone. My baby dwarf hamster escaped yesterday. He is only 19 days old today (May 3). I have spotted him, but he is so fast I can't catch him. Does anyone have an idea how I can catch him? I have put food out where I saw him hoping he would come to it, but when I try to catch him he's gone in a flash. Is there something I can make that would trap him?

BTW...His name is Nemo because he was the only one in the litter. I guess he is really trying to live up to his name. LOL.

Well the only thing I can think of is to set some food and than have a net and when you see him to go the food go very slowy and put the net over him. But I always did that when my mice got out...... Don't know if it will help with a ham ham. good luck

GOOD NEWS!!!!!!!

I caught Nemo. He came out a few times and I missed him. I put one of the longer tubes down with some banana in it where he kept coming out and he finally went in. I snagged him up and put him back in the cage with his mom. His mom scolded him I think. She kept swatting at him and slapping him around. He tried to nurse off of her and she wouldn't let him. She went back into her nest for a little while and slowly let him back in. Then she cleaned him and checked him out.

Would you believe the little booger tried to escape again!!! Now that I know how he is doing it, I put some duct tape on the corners of the cage. The cracks are wider there. I have never really liked that cage, but I put mom in there to have the babies. Now I will move them back to the Crittertrail cages.

Does anyone know if I can put him in with dad yet, or should I wait until he is a little older?

Well Im glad you got him.... I would not put dad back in till he is a little older. He may kill him because he may think it's someone else baby.... Plus are you thinking of breeding her again? If so I would let her wait a few more weeks before rebreeding just to let her rest.

My God - how small is a baby dwarf hamster?

You might be better off with a glass tank or something like that...

I was actually going to put the baby in dad's cage instead of putting dad in there with the baby and mom. I guess I will wait a little longer. I know I need to separate him from mom pretty soon before he is old enough to mate with her. I think that is around 4 weeks and he is just about 3 weeks. I guess I have a few more days to figure all that out.

You are probably right. He sure looked too big to get through the bars, but apparently it is nothing but a bunch of fur. I have a 10 gallon tank that I am probably going to have to put him.

Glass tanks are gerneally better for breeding. I would put him in it, there is less chance of him escaping, and no bars for him to hurt himself on trying to escape.
