I have my female and male hammie in the same cage and I have had them in the same cage for abround 6 months now and usually my female had a litter every month (now dont get angry with me for breeding my hammies, my local pet store buys them from me... I am good friends with the pet stores owner. Also, I have kept 6 in total of her babies and I still have them... in seperate cages of course.) Anywas... for the past 2 1/2 months there hasnt been any babies... now to my question. Do female hammies stop giving birth at a certain age??? I mean she is only around 9 months old. Thanks for the help!!

You have probably breed her to much. Your suppose to give them breaks. If you don't give her breaks you will breed her to death. If you were a good breeder you would know that.

I know that I am supposed to give her breaks and I have. If she isnt able to have any more pups I dont mind. As long as she is healthy... which she is.

If you were sure she was totally healthy you wouldn't be on here aking about it. I would definately seperate them, at a litter a month for at least six monthes, you could already be breeding her to death. That is six litters, I read somewhere that the suggested number of litters is a max of three or four.

shes only had around 4 because she hasnt had a litter in about 2 1/2 months... I personally dont think that she will breed anymore so therefore she will stay in the cage with her mate.

She is not having more babies because she is tired. Her body is either reabsorbing them IF she gets pregnant, or else her body is too tired and weak for her to go into heat again. It a natural defense against being made to breed back to back.

You do not say what type hamster she is, but I am guessing they are dwarves since you have them living together and they are both still alive...

Hamsters should not be bred for the firt time until 4-5 months old- always BEFORE 6 months for the first litter. She should be allowed to rest 4-6 weeks AFTER her babies are weaned before being bred again. SHe should never be bred more than three times and she should never be bred after she is a year old.

Take him out, give her a nice peacuful and happy rest of her too-short life. Stop breeding hamsters if you cannot do it responsibly- and bother to gain some knowledge on hamsters beforehand.

And petshops, by the way, don't need people to breed for them. They can have hamsters shipped in on big trucks much cheaper than they can pay you $1-2 a hamster.

Well before you start getting all upset I am very well informed about breeding hamsters. My male and female dwarves with NOT be split up because they enjoy each others company. I believe that she will not get pregnant again which is fine with me... I dont NEED her to breed. And my LPS did want me to breed my female and male so that he could buy them off of me... he perferred it that way rather than buying them from a large distributer. My female is very healthy and happy right now so she will be fine.
