so i have a pile of baby hamsters, and from what ive heard, their eyes are supposed to open on the 8-9th day after birth. well, we are on day 12 and their eyes are not open yet. they are up and about, wandering the cage when mom leaves, but they cant see. can anyone tell me whats up?

what kind of hamsters are we talking about?
syrian or dwarfs?
i know syrian babies usually open their eyes when they're 12-14 days old

ok yeah they are syrians. i read in like 5 different places that it was at about 8-9 days, but yeah they are syrians....cool i was worried

no, they eye ids start forming around 8-9 days and actually looking more like eyelids lol
and around that time they start exploring the cage and nibbling on food a little...
by day 16 they should ALL have their eyes open..it will happen fast, trust me lol

Don't worry- you have a fw days yet! They'll all be open suddenly. It is hard to wait cause I know you want to hold them! :D

umm my dwarf hamster babies eyes are open does that mean i can pick them up without the mother getting mad? They drink and feed by themselves only going to the mother to nurse less and less everyday.

That is the usual rule of thumb- can be handled, cage can be cleaned when their eyes open

ok well its day the end of day 15 and still nothing. i feel sort of worried...but i mean, how could their eyes not open?

When my hamster had babies, before their eyes opened she accidentally stepped on one of them where his eye was forming under his skin. When all their eyes opened, that one baby had a "lazy eye" kinda. It couldn't open up as far as a normal eye. So i named him Thom from the lead singer of Radiohead because he has one lazy eye. Also sometimes when they've been asleep their eyes won't open for a little bit, like they're stuck shut temporarily. --maybe your babies have stuck-together lids...but i wouldn't advise trying to pry them open just yet...
